Yes I think repairing the matrix is almost impossible actually - most people buy the Porsche Classic repro one (similar but not exact), which is what I was going to do until I was offered this.
Finding an original LH cooler (let alone a working one) is a whole different proposition though…

Well done Matt, hopefully that'll clean up nicely and I have a special tool for tidying up those fins
Wouldn't the LH cooler be the same as RH with different brackets?

Thanks Darren, that would be great!
Maybe it is the same but with the brackets swapped around but the LH one has a different part number (the RH one is 901.107.046.00) in the Competition Parts List, MY’72 911 S, and it might be a carry-over from the 911R as it’s shown in the oil cooling diagram for that but that’s pure speculation on my part. It is a bit of a mystery though as I’ve never seen one!

Carpoint do make a repro LH cooler - in M30 diameter - which has the look of an 911R one:

This article is quite interesting but still doesn’t confirm what was fitted to the S-R:

Somebody out there must know!

Is that aluminium brackets welded on? I wondered what material these are made of.

.
If you haven't already, I'd try Hoseworld (they sell galvanised steel braided hoses for LPG Propane) :
https://www.hoseworld.com/galvanised-ov ... hose.html/
If they can't help, speak to Think Automotive - if they can't supply from stock they may be able to suggest sources ...

Thanks Andy, I’ll try them. I had tried Matt Porter at Think Automotive but that was back when I was under the impression that the hose had orange tracer but I’ve since been told by Russell Edmonds, Flo Feustel and others that that’s not correct and was a later hose (935 etc). I might ask Matt again as well…
Matt Blast’s S-R 0495 did have the orange tracer hose but that was for a centre oil cooler fitted by Carl Thompson for Vasek Polak as part of an RSR bodykit after 1973.

…unfortunately Hoseworld don’t make it in a big enough diameter for M30 fittings however

Don’t say I don’t listen to your advice Dazzer - 5 metres on its way!

Brad sent me these pictures and commented “The hose is made by Argus and is metric so not -16, but in mm. The OD is closer to 30mm. I have built many Argus lines using this hose with original Argus fittings. Attached is a picture of a test assembly. You will have to open up the ID a hair to make the assembly go smoothly.”

“Also note that the brading is steel wire zinc plated, just like the original. It will darken over time. This is not stainless like you see on other builds where it looks out of place…”
Can’t wait for it to arrive now - this is a key part of what makes the 2.5 S-R totally unique.

I’ve also found this via Paul Smith at PRS356 for the bumper cut outs and horn grilles:

Re: From ‘72T to 2.5 S/T: GeLo #44
Good for you Matt
It's a shame the correct size hose is no longer available with the zinc/steel braid and it's a real faff matching hose/braid to achieve what you have but ultimately it'll age as it should which wouldn't be the case if going with stainless steel.
Gary had a neat little collar made to hold the fittings securely whilst making up the lines to avoid damage. I also have the correct sheers for cutting the lines. Worth giving Gary a call if you need any help with yours

Cheers

Yes wil do Darren as that looks like a must-have! I think we might need to pull Gary into helping Angus with my build at relevant points as he is clearly up for these kinds of challenging projects!

Re: From ‘72T to 2.5 S/T: GeLo #44
It’s arrived!

That must be a record in terms of USA to UK dispatch time - 4 days!
With another two months to wait until Angus can get back onto my project (you’ve never seen a 912 shell stripped of so many panels in all your life, along with a Chevrolet pickup truck nearing completion and a ‘71 Targa in the bodyshop at the moment), I’m continuing to hunt down the remaining parts I need: accurate new repro okay, original better! If anyone can help with the latter, please do let me know:
- LHD dashboard with no cracks;
- ‘72 S rear stabiliser bar brackets, bushings & fittings;
- Original (not converted - got one of those already) 10k tacho, p/n 911.604.304.00. Yes I know they’re like hen’s teeth…;
The rest, including custom Kroon wiring loom (£4k), will have to be ordered new, refurbished or fabricated.
Roll on August!
