...over many years I have collected and saved every photo of 3.0RS's I've came across. Countless hours have been spent (wasted?) studying and cross checking with the aim of building the shell with every Group 4 modification carried out and exactly as it would have been when it left the race department back in 1974.....but I'm still learning! :? ....

...when building the RS/RSR back in the day the race department found that this part of the G-Series shell got in the way....

Image

....so they cut it off!...

Image

...now, as have we!..

...we knew there would be some modification needed to the bumper support to clear the oil valve....

Image

...no chance with a pipe bender so a little cut and shut required....

Image

....and now sorted...

Image

....however we also found the bumper was too close and fouling the oil tank so this required adjustment and modification...

Image

....and whilst I wouldn't have bothered if everything had fitted nicely, we took the opportunity to reprofile the leading arch edge which I always thought could have been better...

Image

....when again referencing photos for exactly how this should be I had to smile when looking at pics of the latest restoration of #9099.....you could be forgiven for thinking the restorers hadn't been too careful with the alignment of bumper to arch fit...

Image

....but nope, this was exactly how it was in the day! :) ...

...Gary had bonded on a couple of Porsche supports to attach to inner wing brackets....

Image

...which we then fibreglassed as per factory spec...

Image

Image

...and whilst back with us we also addressed concerns we had with how the rear spoiler would stand up over time so gave it a light scotch and painted in durable 2 pack...

Image

...really pleased with the result which I think looks better and no more worries with how it might last...

Image

...meanwhile I took the bumper to Concept Racing where Bop beautifully fabricated me a couple of front grills, this will be painted black as per the original below....

...not quite the look and spec I'm aiming for and only 4 pot! :? ...

....with my engine still looking like this...

....however the donor engine served a purpose and helped me keep an appointment to have some more jewellery fabricated...

The twin outlet look is really elegant…personal preference obviously but the symmetry is more pleasing…

.

That exhaust really is a work of art - the fabricator is not someone I'd been previously aware of but now 'bookmarked' .

I'm sure that, in future, prospective restorers of the 'real thing' will be using your build thread as a reference source in terms of how things should be done ...

Really kind of you to say so Andy.

Many years ago when building the Mongrel Ben Coles told me BTB were the exhaust fabricators of choice and their work was pure art, I contacted them at the time but went with a less expensive option. I wasn't aware until Friday that Ryan was BTB's main fabricator until he set up on his own about 10 years ago and now makes systems for many of the high end Porsche specialists we all know.

The exhaust is to Nick's design incorporating all the 'best bits' based on his and Ryan's many years of development work on 911's. I can't wait to hear how it sounds and will certainly be fitting his system to the Mongrel when funds allow 8)

In other news door and window frames have been successfully black anodised and are looking good...

Image

...I would have preferred a more aged and slightly faded look although the used frames I'd purchased weren't quite good enough.

Pleased with how these have turned out as black anodising old frames is notoriously difficult which is why many restorations go with powder coating which I really didn't want to do.

Looking forward to seeing these built up and fitted and something that could be swapped out if Richard Murphy ever leaves his gloriously aged SC unattended for a few hours in my vicinity!
