Not enough ballast in the world

I did the car on its own, most of its miles are two up so square was what I was aiming at.

After a second go at the rack shims the steering is perfect again, turn in so precise it's almost telepathic On the first attempt just putting it back together as it was (with new bearings etc) it had to much friction so it was slow to self centre. So I've pulled out the thinnest shim (about 0.25mm) and luckily it worked.

Drove out today to a local cars and coffee where there was an incredible selection of cars in the winter sunshine, I know it's theoretically spring, but it was only just above freezing so winter it is.

Countach was obviously the star of the show so no apologies for the red car spam, but something for everyone today.

I've never been a fan of the Countach - to me it looks too much like a kit car with all those scoops, arch extensions, spoilers & other assorted add-ons ... even more so when seen in the same shot as an early 911.

Quite unusual to see a little Renault 750/4CV - always liked those - to me a more interesting/stylish rear engined alternative to a Beetle ...

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this thread so let’s bring it up to date!

Dropped my daughter back at Uni in the summer for the last time, obviously back over the peaks in time for sunset


Went to Spain and did some silly things in Bentleys


Lovely breakfast gathering with our design team

Then on a ferry…

Weather wasn’t always so good in Spain, but we had some awesome drives. Particularly memory was when James and I were separated from the bunch and ‘pressed on’ through some of the most stunning driving roads I’ve ever seen. Tyres were already bald and there was nothing left after that!

Some of the route, must finish this layout at some point!

Back to reality at work but compensated by seeing the Le Mans winning Speed 8 out the front

Distracted by wood working making a porch for my Sons house.

After the Spanish drive it was a sad sad day to hear of Ian’s passing.

DDK has always been about the people as much as the cars and I was really proud how our little community came together to support Ian’s family at the funeral. I hope it meant as much to them as it did to us to see a long line of colourful cars. Great readings from Jason and Mark lightened a dark day.

Le Mans happened in the daily this year as the gearbox oil leaks were out of control, so the car was pretty much parked up after the Spain trip. Wood work continued!

Washed the dust off for one weekend to a local cars and coffee

Got the porch built to clear the garage so I could get on with the winter project of the gearbox


Time to make a mess!

Lump out on its trolley:
End casing off

.. and remembering to rescue the pesky reverse gear pin before it gets lost!

Mid case off to reveal the gear sets.

Nothing disastrous, but more grey and sludgy than I’d like in the oil.

Undo the bearing clamp plate, remove the detent bolts, then wiggle the whole lot out in one go.


Inside of the bellhousing is grim with oil, but crankcase side is clean. So at least one of the leaks was out the input shaft seal.


Might drop a new clutch fork on this time!


And a new release bearing sleeve. Both fork and sleeve have been changed in my ownership, guess that’s what’s comes from using your car as intended, you get to replace things twice!
