Fuel pump install help needed

The fuel pump on my '61B is leaking badly. I saw that I could just get a new replacement rather than rebuild it again for not much more.

So I bit the bullet and got one.

Now, can I just screw off and bolt on or do I need to check the rod travel? This is a straight swap, like for like with the same size spacers/gaskets.

Or do I have to measure? If so how? I can't find any info on this anywhere.

Anyone know how or have any tips? do I need to use the special tool VW 328A - I have the early-style pump with the dome top.

It should be a straight swap if you had no problem with the fuel delivery.
If you want to check the rod and stroke length it would be good , but I bet you'll be fine without.

With gaskets and intermediate block in place on the case , you should have a pushrod stroke of 4mm.
Measurement of the pushrod when sticking out of the case and the gaskets cand block compressed is 29mm when the rod is in the case and 34mm when sticking out.
The rod should be about 104- 105mm long, and the rounded end goes into the engine.

No problems with the old one apart from leaking.

Another question on this...

After having problems with the fibre washer/spacer, I finally got my pump sorted. All installed without too much hassle.

Now it leaks! gushing out of the two halves of the pump. Argh! I looked at the receipt and I've had the pump sitting around for over a year!!! so no going back to the supplier.

I have tried nipping up the screws, still leaks. Now my question is, can I split the two halves just enough to smear some sealer in there? Do you think that would work? or am I looking at a rebuild kit and dry install? or should it have some sort of gasket seal on it? If I do rebuild, do I use the old pump or the new?

The preference is to bodge first. Can I put some sort of gasket seal on the rubber diaphragm?

Firstly, are you sure it's leaking from around the joint between the 2 halves (where the diaphragm is sandwiched) ?

Could it be leaking from above (where the dome is attached) & running down the outside of the casing ?

The reason I ask is that, from memory, that's the only place there's a gasket (cork or rubber).

99% Sure it's the Diaphragm as I have wiped it, let it dry and checked.

I will look again, though.

I was worried about distorting the 'bell' bit, as I know they are prone to distorting. Might try and nip that up too, just to eliminate that area.

But I must say it has made a massive difference to the car starting from cold. Just can't leave it running.
