Rear seat belts

With the impending arrival of a little Gunster into our household, I want to have a set of rear seat belts installed in the 912 - before I contact Stuart at Quickfit belts, has anyone any other ideas / alternatives??

I have fitted rear belts in my car.

My 1st rear belt mech I fitted was a unit from a 993, bought from one of the breakers.

The unit I have just fitted to the other side ( for daughter number 2) is the one from SBS.

Ironically the brand new SBS one cost the same as the used 993 unit

The main problem is drilling the hole through the rear parcel shlf. You will need a 90deg drill attachment if the glass is in the car.

Congrats Ian!

I had QF do the seat and the belts and they make sure everything fits just fine, very good service. I would get belts in both sides (unlike me) then you can swop seat around. Very important for being able to lean over to back to scrape goo of car if you are on your own and the missus to do the same, very hard if they are stuck behind you.

If you intend to fit a rearward from birth baby seat I think you might struggle to find one to fit in the narrow seat bases in the rear.

Make sure the baby seat you intend to buy will actually fit properly, its a good year or so before you can have them (child) facing forward.

We struggled to find one to fit the Honda which would allow the passenger to have enough leg room, if you're a short ar*e that might not be a problem.

If your thinking for when the little Gunster is much older than forget what I've just said.

I had a 944 lap belt in my 911 for the little one for a year

Until they are a certain age/weight they are safer travelling in a basket type seat which the lap belt goes accross and unless your feet are v short the front seat will prevent any movement forward .
This ferried my little girl to nursery for 12 mths (Seat was called a MAXI -COSI /CITI and was narrow enough to fit in a rear 911 seat). I only had 1 free space in the back because I had an RS rollbar so I had a mamas n pappas seat in the front passenger seat for my 3 yr old (It sits neatly into the corduroy part of a recaro without damaging the leather/vinyl piece) and is safe as houses.

Longer term, the 993 belt may be the best option but when driving on longer trips with my son (3) it was actually a lot handier having him in the front ....and he loved it.

From what I understand just relying on the rear part of the front seat to prevent forward movement of a baby carrier is NOT advisable. They have to be secured by a regular 3 point seat belt, a lap belt and the back of the front seat is not enough in the event of a collision. The back of the seat can always move forward with the force of a crash, the baby carrier can then become free from its security, not good.

Its your call but I wouldn't risk it at all!!!!

Get 3 point belts fitted then take the car to Mothercare or somewhere similar and get them to try and find a setup to fit. If nothing does, its tough luck, but at least the littleun will be safe in a different vehicle.

Thanks guys - everyday ferrying around duties will be done by Mrs G's Honda Jazz and I will probably end up with a MB estate to replace my 190E. I had heard of people using 993 belts but I will contact Quickfit and see what the costs are.

I never had any belts when I used to go in my cot in my dads 356 - never did me any harm (apart from an annoying interest in air cooled Porsches!)

What all of this brings to mind to me is the Yellow pages Advt with James Nesbitt and the Corvette and that panic that comes over any petrol head when a bambino is on the way ...a whole diff'rent ball game

,I'd better clarify

...the front seat was not the only thing stopping the baby seat going forward ....The arrangement on the Maxi-cosi is like a hook and lock on both sides of the seat where the lap belt crosses (as well as the 5 point baby restraint) so it wasnt going anywhere forward and backward was the engine firewall and the particular narrow base made it fit really snug in the seat cavity ....certainly better than any other seat I looked at that would work in a 3 point arrangement . I will try to find some pics of the setup in the 72 car but cant put my hands on them right now.

In fact, Ive tried many seats in a few different configs of 911 (I once spent half an hour trying to squeeze and anchor this child seat into a 996 )
This is a safe setup but a non ideal seat

As mentioned above, there are so few seats that fit properly that I think finding the right seat is the real trick rather than the seatbelt config ...and you'll know whats safe when it sits in there.
