1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6
Hi guys
https://www.boutsenclassiccars.com/list ... isting=103
I have just finished my first year historic racing (in 1964 Lotus Elan 26R on Dunlop L section tyres). Am absolutely hooked. Been a Porsche guy for years... currently have '71 2.2E in first paint, a couple of 928s and some other stuff.
906s have been stable at $2m for a long time. That's at the level where even if I could afford it, I wouldn't want to race it. You see this with a lot of big ticket race cars, once the value hits a certain level the owner commissions a 'proper' replica with an HTP and races that instead. Everyone knows but no one says anything. Most of the 250 SWB Ferraris you see at Goodwood fall into this pot. This car is a bit different. The owner owned the 'real' chassis 104 and was competing in Tour Auto in it and had an accident and the car was burned out completely.
He then commissioned a full replica which is the car you see here. Most importantly, it has a european HTP which (as I understand it) means that as far as racing is concerned, the car "is" a 906. Obviously for the very best events which are invitational, it's still down to someone's subjective opinion but in terms of all the events for which a real 906 is eligible, this is eligible on a technical level.
The asking price is eur450k which is roughly the build cost (maybe a bit less I think the build was about eur500k).
I have been told the car has a correct 2 litre flat 6 with magnesium case and a mag cased gearbox (as per original). I guess what I need to know is
a) is this a stupid idea
b) are the engine and gearbox original to 104 or sourced from somewhere else
c) how well documented is the build
d) what other questions would you ask
any and all thoughts welcome.
Joel
PS: for this price I could get a continuation Lola T70 which is another thing I'm looking at
PPS: if this could be road registered it would make the most amazing road sports car

What a fantastic-looking thing. Fwiw, I was on the Tour when the original burnt out. I remember arriving at Dijon or somewhere and whatever was left, which was not much, was still smouldering

Re: 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6
Hi
Looks a nice enough car for sure, the devil is always in the detail though.Htp is useful for the events, but not the b all of everything. From what i am reading the 906 that burnt out was a rep of the original too,or am i reading that part wrong.
I remember the car catching fire, there was nothing left of it,mag cases would have been totally f——-d
When i purchased my 906 i had done a awful lot of research as mine had the wrong chassis number of 101 which we then proved to be 129.
When looking before i got mine,at the nurburgring old timer grand prix,3 x 906 had the same chassis number and htp! At the same event.
They are dangerous to race properly, very flimsy,no protection, catch fire, vibrate like no tomorrow,so needs lots of maintenance and keeping tip top,the only car i fitted two extinguisher systems to,you are also sat between two 10 gallon fuel tanks which are very vulnerable.
They look wonderful and are fast, A 904 would be a better car and alot safer, but dont let me put you off:)
The front would go light at 150mph plus in the dark at lemans with poor lighting,i had two proper numbered 906 mag engines both making more than 230bhp,the mag gearboxes are a bit fragile.
I doubt very much the engine and box are the real deal,a couple of folk making the gearboxes in mag and ali, plenty of 906 spec engines about but expensive,if built right they are very reliable,my shift light was at 8k.
Hope this helps to a little insight,oh and they sound wicked inside and out, hence my tinnitus
.
Anytime contact me.

Re: 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6
Sorry some questions to ask.
Full spec of engine and box.
Wheel carriers,who made them.
All running components crack tested with certificates.
Fuel tanks legal and indate.
Repro wheels or the real deal.
Hours on running gear.
Htp in date.
If still running front suspension original type rose joints, how old are they and crack tested etc
What adjustable dampers are fitted,if at all, difficult to see from limited pics.
Who made the chassis, has it been inspected for cracks etc,i believe Freisinger stll has the ex factory chassis jigs.
Its plenty of money,so the some of the goods needs to be there somewhere.
Lola T70 is a fast beast, had plenty of them trundling by me,Good luck with it all.

God yes, what a beautiful thing. Can't think of a better way of spending £400k!
From a practical point of view, think you've got to assume there will be issues that need work, so have a healthy budget set aside for that. Any opportunity for a track demonstration or test drive? Either yourself or a respected driver. Lastly, take a specialist along to inspect before closing the deal. Maybe Yellow491 would like a trip to Monaco

Peter Iverson races a 906 and they are a super car
https://search.app?link=https%3A%2F%2Fw ... s%2Fm2%2F4
He is on Instagram extra and maybe worth a car. He helped me when I had a generator issue in Denmark.
I think they are a super car and it will be amazing to race. However, have you considered an early 911. There is an active 2l race series and an original car will hold its value better?? (Who knows). I suspect the racing will be just as fun and within your budget?

Re: 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6
Hi everyone
Thanks for the very useful replies. The fragility / vulnerability point is a good one. Would I really be happy racing one of these… not sure. That’s something the T70 has in its favour, they are strong and safe and you don’t sit in the fuel tank. However, as many people have said and it’s worth saying again, just look at it ! So beautiful.
Re early 911. I love an early 911 as much as the next man but to be honest a 2 litre cup car can’t hold a candle to the Elan 26R, as a driving experience, in my humble opinion.
Hence wanting my next move to be a proper purpose built racing car. I have tested a Chevron B8 which is same weight as my Elan (600kg) has a little more power (225bhp vs 190) and I was 10s a lap quicker at Silverstone GP on the first try in someone else’s car. The grip, the agility were off the scale, it was a completely intoxicating experience.
I think ideally I need someone who really knows what they are doing to go down to Monaco and run the rule over the car. I love the idea of being able to enter it in Masters or Peter Auto just like a real one but at a quarter of the price. But you’re basically buying someone else’s project so it’s critical to understand what exactly has been built and therefore what to pay.
@Yellow491 fancy a trip to Monaco and dinner on me?
Joel

When you thinking of going, never been to Monaco,do i need a designer man bag to walk around with:)
The B8 are very good racers,i was educated to how fast they are at my first time drive in my 906 at a silverstone f1 support race.

If I may...
Contact Sean McClurg at McClurg motorsport in Bedfordshire as he has prepped and raced Nick Thompson's B6 (maybe a B8) for years, has deep knowledge of these old race cars and is as straight as a die.
He runs a preparation business but races them as well as his Alfa and previously 26R etc.
He has done the chassis geo on my Lola-Porsche, have known him for years.
