...does anybody know why the grills are two different lengths?

- do you mean apart from the fact that the longer ones are for swb cars & the shorter ones for lwb models ?

Because the indicators are different lengths.

Andy, exactly, is it because the SWB cars had the side light in the headlamp? - then why move it for the LWB and shorten the grill?

The tendency with car manufacturers over the years (especially in the '60's) has been to continually increase the size of the front & rear lamps.

Porsche altered the size of these lamps when they increased the wheelbase in '68 with the introduction of the 'lwb' models - there was a fixed distance between the front edge of the wheelarch & the bonnet so by increasing the size of the indicator/sidelight meant there needed to be a corresponding decrease in the size of the horn grilles.

Thats the answer! - I can see now, as Porsche rarely did anything with out a very good reason, especially when re tooling was concerned.
