It's time to add some more city stickers to the 914. Quite a few DDKers already visited the area. The plan is to drive from Calais to Tours, San Sebastian, Barcelona and then back through France. I've been to Madrid many times so I'm keen to visit elsewhere. Spain has some of the best food in the world and San Sebastian should be very special.
The last trip in the 914 was very enjoyable but highlighted some areas for refinement. Since then I have
Added LED headlights
Replaced the water funnel in the engine bay and unplugged the water drain holes
Boot fixed so it seals correctly
Dent repaired in the front left wing
Removed the heating fan and hoses
3 new wheel bearings
New back right UJ
New muffler
2 new rear brake calipers
New CL brake pads
Stopped driver seat moving
Added cup holders
Tuned and serviced
I'm sure there is more ..

Off to a bad start. Horrid journey to LeShuttle. 4 hours of moving slowly. Arrived to a 2.5h delay. Might be longer as we aren't on the train yet. Only 5 hours drive on the other side. So far one piece of external trim now in the bonnet.
Reading more of Rebecca Struthers' Hands of Time. It's slowly growing on me. She makes watches with her husband Craig. Which quite now as expensive as a Smith they are beyond my pockets.

The trip down to Dover is a real pita.
We have used it for decades now, but almost all the runs are so slow, but we have been through the boarding complex usually quite well. Be pleased you are not battling Birmingham airport....

I think I'm regretting the drive. We arrived at the place in Tours just before 4am. Then on the road again at 10am. Finally we are in our hotel room at 5pm. A couple of missed turns but all ok. The car is getting on my nerves a bit. The CL5+ pads are working well but squeaking very loudly. Wake the neighbours up loud. Mrs B has said she is never driving the car again if it makes that noise. I don't blame her. She took over last night when I was very tired. Within 20 mins had selected 2nd rather than 4th and stalled the car. Woke me up enough to drive again. I think there is a thread on how to stop the CL brakes squeaking.
One of the idle jets is blocked again. Runs great when on the main circuit. Given that I now have 2 fuel filters and idle jets doctors I'm confused. I think the next step when home is clean the carbs and replace the rubber after the last filter. Anyway the car is parked and forgotten about for now.
The hotel is very central. The room is large and comfortable. Class of Cider as we checked in. Passed a wedding party as we arrived.
A friend recommended this place. Lets see if we can get in tonight
PS Mrs Bardsley says because I didn't write many amazing songs and steal the show at Live Aid I'm not allowed any facial hair!

San Sebastian is a very interesting place. Quite unlike other Spanish places I have been. I think more like Wales. Amazing green mountains surrounding it and wonderful sandy beaches. It has been in the mid teens temperaturewise while we are here so quite bearable for us. The food is certainly Spanish but particularly Basque. The popular pintxos bars are very busy but you can get served if you are happy to stand in the street. Franco banned people from not using Spanish so attempted to eliminate different identities in Spain. It remains a popular holiday destination for the Spanish to escape their hot summers. The population is very homogeneous. Not quite the culture mix in London. The old town we are staying in remains me a little bit of the Walled city of St Malo but retaining more of it's character. Appears we arrived during a downtime before the very busy summer holiday. Hence, some of the museums and restaurants we wanted to visit are taking a break.
We visited the Basque Museum. Took a ride up the funicular for amazing views of the sea and town.
I cleaned the idle jets but one jet refused to come out even when I took the carb off. Took me a while to get the housing centred and screwed back in. Tomorrow will tell if it's better as we drive to Barcelona.
Yesterday there was a triathlon running as we walked over one gentleman was exiting the sea but had missed the cut off time so had his race numbers removed and wasn't allowed to continue. I used to race triathlons, more duathlons, quite seriously. In a previous life I finished 18th in my age group at the WC racing near Atlanta. I used to prepare quite methodically and thought of missing the cut off was unthinkable. That is what had frustrated me about the car not running quite as well as I expected. I thought I had left no stone unturned in preparing it but perhaps I broke one rule when changing the brakes pads compounds a week before. The rule of changing too close to the event or perhaps trying to do too much. 2 years after my first WC I was fitter and flying. I was preparing to race in Belgium. During my last hard training session of 10*400m I was almost keeping up with a runner that normally I was nowhere near. Then I worked late the night after at work and arrived at the race ill feeling well below average. Once again trying to do too much.
