Just bought a 911 engine...

For my Split bus.

Before I get flamed off the site, can anyone give me some advice please.

It's a 2.7 from an Early 80's car with not MFI but the later one.

The engine is a good runner I am assured, but I require an oil tank for it.

Does this engine have an external oil cooler?

Is the FI Easily changed for carbs?

Before I fit it into the bus are there any checks that I should carry out (take the heads off e.t.c)

Any weak points in the engine that are best to deal with just now, and sort out?

Any advice much appriciated guys....

Hello there.

The 2.7 has the reputation of being a bit stressed thermally..

So an external cooler may be wise in a heavy bus..but IANAL.
Its not really a good idea to fit carbs to a stock 2.7 CIS..all you will gain is a better induction note, while losing economy ..and decent carbs are worth more than a compltete good runner 2.7.

All you need is the two fule lines and pump, CDI box, tacho, starter,oiltank and lines, preferably an external cooler system with Porsche T'stst and your off to the races.

Say, 600 quids all in..

Is this the engine that POZE was selling on vzi ?

First of all the 2.7 was only fitted up to '77 - after that a 3.0 engine was fitted (up until the end of the '83 model year) so if it came from an early '80's 911 chances are that it's a 3.0SC engine.

If you can tell us the engine type & serial numbers (stamped into the crankcase to the righthand side of the fan) we'll be able to identify the engine for you.

I am over the moon, I never dreamt in a million years that I would get a Porsche engine for the bus.. I have been like a fat kid in a sweet shop all day..

What about doing anything to the engine while it's out, anything I should be looking at?

a few easy things you could do

Take the valve covers off and check the head barrel nuts, and possibly set the valve clearances as well while you're there, worth the peace of mind for the price of a valve cover gasket kit from Euro’s and a bit of time settiing the clearances.

another idea...you could also check the on-engne thermostat (back of the crankcase) is functioning correctly, (opens around 180f I think) it’s easy to get to with the engine out, a pig to do with the engine in (all that CIS is in the way).

Good move chap - i've just picked up a 3.0 for my project trekker. As you can see, you can't get better info than on here - that bus ought to hustle along a bit sharper soon! Good luck with the fit up

Ok, got some details confirmed...

It's a late 70's 2.7.

I am going to have to bin the CIS as it will not fit in the van as the firewall in the bus is to low to house the FI.
So I am going to fit carbs onto it.
A little bit annoyed about loosing the FI, as I was looking forward to not having to tune carbs, and loose the economy of the FI, but I am just going to have to live with it, as I am less keen about cutting the firewall about.

Going to pick the engine up next weekend, 1000 mile round trip in a day...Not looking forward to that bit actually...
