Thanks Paul, I'll definitely give Chris a ring for the gearbox recon.

Made some good progress this weekend, its not so bad once you get stuck in! I've made a big list of everything I'm taking off/disconnecting so will post it up once I've done, for other novice engine-droppers like me.

Think I'm going to need a bigger trolley jack than my poxy Halfords one. Anyone got any recommendations for a good purchase or can lend me one next Saturday in Putney? Can collect and return in the trusty Golf!

I bought a Sealey one nearly twenty years ago: I think it's around 2 1/2 tons, and is pretty substantial.

I thought perhaps I would get five years out of it, and in fact it's literally as good as new: not bad as it's probably had nearly eight years of full time commercial use in that time as well. Therefore can recommend Sealey: my local motor factor can get them, so I assume they're fairly easy to get hold of.

Just so long as the jack is fairly substantial, with thick side plates to stop warping, it'll probably do. As a rough guide my one lifts upto twenty inches high or so, weighs around 25 kilos, and I think the modern equivelents are around £80?.

HTH

P.S. Don't forget some large axle stands: if you are dropping the engine/box using the trolley jack, the stands go underneath the torsion bar end covers. Often firms do jack and axle stand deals: you know the sort of thing: 'Buy the jack, and get the stands free .....' :)

Crazy Recon Quotes? Jaz?

Post by JRWhybrow »

Engine and box are out and separated! A lot easier than I expected even with the limited space and tools.

The next shock was some of the quotes I got for reconditioning the box, especially as I am going to drop the box off clean, shiney and ready to attack! I guess I was expecting close to a grand for the labour plus all the parts that are worth changing while you're in there and the dreaded vat, but close to 2 Grand and my credit card started going limp

One of the less scarey quotes I got was from Jaz in Wembley. Does anyone know anything about them? Are they any good, or have there been scare stories around?

The guy I spoke to sounded very busy and not particularly friendly, but I don't care as long as they do a good job and it lasts another 33 years...

After my mini horror story with a non-porsche specialist, I went to see Steve at Jaz to take care of my 911T.

If you go and see him, you'll find that he's really nice and knows his porsches well. He's got a small team of mecanics but he takes care of the early 911s mihself.

I've asked him to sort the suspension, the gear linkage and the carbs. He did a really good job on all these. When I fist went to see him, he really took the time to discuss the car with me, run me through was he thought was right and wrong. Really helpful.

I can't comment on engine and gearbox rebuilts but I have the feeling that you'll find they do a good work.

I would advise you go and visit on Saturday morning as he usually spends the time then to chat. During the week, he can be quite busy.
Beware, he runs in the Open Porsche club GB series and he not always there on the Saturdays.

Hope that helps,

Christophe.
