Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
I was donated some "R-style" lights, but decided not to fit them onto the ModRod. So with a backing plate to fill the factory exhaust outlet and some wiring, I now have an auxiliary brake light...

Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
I had always planned to make a roof rack...Started out with a basic pipe bender (then read the difference between pipe and tube )
But using EMT tubing is cheap and easy to bend...Also really easy to MIG weld
Quickly realised it was going to be easier to make 4 separate bend sections and then connect with longer lengths. I added some tread bar to the internal joints making the connections stronger and help keep everything square
Then used some flat bar for the cross supports (bolted to the tubes to add rigidity) and started to figure out the rain gutter clamps
Authentic Old English vinyl luggage
Next job, paint.....Colour matching the sun faded Polo red with "Flirt Alert" is amazing, especially at $6 a can vs custom mix

Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
All painted up and fitted. Road test today, its still in place
Could easily have painted it silver.....but liking the Royal Mail utility look
A few coats of wax around the gutters and some heat shrink on the mountain points
Another rack planned soon....Now need a road trip

Chris are you intending to still do the rear arches as per your draft drawings?

Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
I am guessing the drawing looks bit flared ? I put it down to artistic license
No intention to do anything on the 912, but I did have a good sniff around this car at Rennsport. I have seen pictures of it before, but up close (and a cheeky feel up inside), the rear arches definitely feel custom/grafted on, but retain the SWB bumpers. Not sure if they are completely hand formed of modified based on something existing. I seem to remember Sladey modifying his rear arches by hammering to shape a later arch ?....I think:
I have thought about trying this on the Modrod and running 7" rears, but it's abit of a commitment :

Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
On the later cars there is a vertical strip around the edge of each arch (to give visual definition?) - I hammered that out so that it was a continuation of the arch curve coming down from the wing.
These look like something else - don’t think you could achieve that easily with hammering as there seems to be a lot of movement (going from memory of stock arches) - I wonder if something has been grafted on - maybe formed on a buck off the car and then welded on.
But take what I say with a pinch of salt - it’s just speculation from someone with limited experience and no training

Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
Bit off topic but I am doing a GTA-R Alfa like you mentioned at the beginning of the thread and have been debating putting the GTA Alfaholics arches.
I also have a 912 which is in the process of having a Polopolus engine and don't know whether to stay stock or mod the body.

Not off topic at all Mike, nice dilemma to have. Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
Yes mate, I remember what you did now.....Pretty sure the arches discussed above are hand formed off the car and then grafted on. Very nicely done

Re: 912 - Sympathetic refresh
Got around to making the decklid rack....All racked up, nowhere to go
Brackets made and test fit...
Colour-ish match...
Finally found a home for those "Old English Vinyl" suitcases...
