Fan cover colour

Post by RobFrost »

Cleaned up the engine bay a bit this morning. It looked like the first time this had been done in 52 years.

Anyway... what colour should the fan cover / ducting be on a 1970 911T? It's currently white/light grey underneath, with dark grey/black paint on top, flaking away.

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

Original would have been black (gel coat) except for the oil cooler duct which was light grey.

The main fan shroud had probably faded over the years so has been painted black.

Cool, thanks. I have exactly that except the sticking up bit has been painted black, which is flaking.

I guess the proper job if and when I remove it, is to drill out the rivets and add a new gel coat to the base?

I was going to say it should be yellow and looks like this - I guess not then. Very difficult to get the yellow one clean. Were the coloured shrouds for later cars?

Back at my computer now. Found this thread - yours is a 2.4T MFI apparently!

I know its a 2.4T MFI, I've had it for 25 years :P

But that compilation pic on the Pelican thread is good. My yellow one is a bit different to the 2.4 MFI shown (the grey plastic cover at the front is short, like the 74... :cyclopsani:

The picture shown for a 2.4T mfi yellow fan shroud in that thread is wrong - the riveted-on (full length) light grey oil cooler duct was only fitted on the 2.2 litre models - none of which had a yellow fan shroud !

All of the 2.4 models had an integrated oil cooler duct - only the final (separate) section was light grey.
