Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild
Mike, I'll call you by some futuristic device called a phone...this afternoon.
Chris, it was more than a tech action, and the moral support is worth more to me as I wandered round Ina fog over this lot!
I finished the cake just!
Rob has written a killer report to forward to Clewett and their response will be interesting, especially if there is a response, I think he has decided that the unit will be repaired or replaced and that is it.
I may be surprised.
I will discuss return to Virginia with Electromotion this afternoon, I have a special number to call.
What a game.
I've had to cancel my spot at the rolling road, and was advised when I'm ready, there is a 3 week waiting list to the next slot.
Mad.

I know the rolling road is the least of your worries but if Ben is too booked, when you are ready, there is another near me that is very good and priced sensitivity

Good to read Neil, thank you.
Unit off to the States tomorrow, fingers and more crossed.
Picking up the alternative system from Mike B tomorrow, quite a bit of kit...
Finished the plug leads off hoping for a rapid tun around from the USA, but no bother to un-pick it for Mikes loaned system.
Must come to an end soon.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild
As I expected, just been told I blew the XDi controller, but tests will tell when it is back in Virginia.
This is based on details i provided 10 days ago, in which case why leave me fighting it and following Clewett suggestions for 10 days.
Electromotive could test it and tell me anything, but i bet it will be my fault and the charge will be $$$$ or I don't get it back.
I have very little confidence left.
Rob/ Chris, if you are reading this, no answers to the questions on the report just it is a simple device and I probably blew it up.

The proximity of the XDi box to the coil pack.
They have not been specific.
I presume, the noise rom he coils and leads so close to the sensor cable took a jolt of something to the XDi input circuit and zap.,
However, for many starts the light was solid green, no alternating on cranking etc.
Dat Chris and Rob came yesterday, Chris and Isaw separate times the light did alternate, first times ever, so I doubt Clewett statement is true, but I'm sure I will be blamed and charged, bound to be duffel over.

That comment from Clewitt sounds like bullshit…
Hope you can move on from this and we get to see the car out again this summer.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild
Sorry to hear that. I'd need to know on what basis they draw that conclusion. It's as impossible for you to disprove their claim as it is for them to prove it. If connecting it to the sensor and operating correctly blows it up then it's not fit for purpose. Personally I'd do my best to brush aside any judgment about their behaviour and focus totally on getting to a good outcome. Personally, I believe Electromotive will be honest regarding whether the goods are defective. None of your options are great. I would ask them what typically blows and what the test/repair protocol is. They probably have a known, common failure. Chris suspected a cracked solder joint then I'd say that's still likely if you haven't mistreated it as he's pretty experienced. I'd probably prioritise the different possible outcomes in order of preference and then work down them one by one trying to get them to agree. But I can be pretty pushy and I'm not afraid to upset people when I want to get from A to B:911hillclimber wrote:As I expected, just been told I blew the XDi controller, but tests will tell when it is back in Virginia.

-One gambit might be to look for a year of manufacture on the box. If you're lucky it'll be a few years old and then I'd argue it's been kicking around Clewett or somebody else's warehouse for years - it's new old stock, shouldn't have been passed off as new. Much more likely it was damaged there. They obviously need to supply a refund/replacement.
-Ask what typically blows and how to repair it.
-Propose a compromise - you might agree to pay the postage if they do the fix.
-Compromise - propose Electromotive send you a new unit at half price. You send back the one you have.
-Invite them to join the thousands of Porsche enthusiasts following your threads on DDK, impact bumpers, pistonheads, etc. and point out that their outstanding customer service will show them in a good light when you write a truthful account of how you've been treated. Include links.
-Cut a square screwdriver head and pop those screws off the side - look for melted resin on the board or cracked solder joints, particularly around the connector on the back.
-Buy a new one, appears to be in stock here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184604417847 check it's the same unit first.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild
Hmm, So a device is designed and sold that is known to be destroyed in the environment that it is meant to be designed for?
Engine bays are electrically noisy environments. That’s why electronic engineers (like me) spend countless hours designing circuits for for such environments - defensive circuitry. It’s also why we spend ££££ taking our kit to EMC test houses where they are subjected to horrible things like simulated lightning strikes and alternator load dump tests (look it up). This is bourne out of products that require a CE mark to be sold in Europe and the test data to back it up.
The USA has no such equivalent which goes some way to explain why products are cheaper. I seem to recall our EMC testing and subsequent rework to comply was around £20k.

Back in the 80s I battled emc in those test houses down south when I worked in the weighing industry as it rapidly went from analogue to digital, all Weights and Measures.
We made them bomb proof even back then.
This design was launched in 2005.
I think Mike load kit has a 12 lead distributor....beyond my pay cheque.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild
Head still buzzzing after 310 mile round trip to the Lakes to collect my loaned system from Mike.
Full twin spark distributor, Bosche 'black boxes' and twin coils with wires attached and working.
Looks great and VERY period.
Distributor cap a work of art, rotor arm too, BUT, there is no advance device in the dist. solid drive shaft from crank to rotor arm.
Still will do to get it running.
XDi box now in the hands of DHL via my local currier, Mrs Hillclmber, doing her bit!
Worry is where to set the timing.
There are good witness marks on the clamp bracket so suspect that will be good enough to get some sparks in the right place at the right time.
While there venting my spleen to Mike about this saga, chap walked in.
"oh, are you the chap asking about Clewett on Impact Bumpers?"
Small world.

Steve Wong's one of the top guys in 3.2 ignition timing and he says 8-9 degrees less advance than the same engine with single plugs. Not sure if that helps you. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engi ... -plug.html

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild
Thanks Rob.
Mike's system on loan has a solid dist spindle as if one advance position is used for all engine speeds.
However, I hope to fit it to just start the engine no more.
Need to do the plug leads and some other bits.
Suppose I could re-fit my old dist etc just to get it to fire.
The news is talking about double digit inflation coming soon, so not sure about a season this year at all!
