Apparently so. 1,000 hours of Porsche Classic time on the shell alone…

Porsche Classic hourly rate is €125 + vat

times 1000 = €125,000 + vat

I’ll see if I can find where I saw that number. Might have been Gib Bosworth’s LY ST thread on ESR or the Keyser book. In which case it might have been USD but its still going to be a big number to do a total restoration from that state, and make parts from scratch.

It was actually circa EUR 750k + VAT according to billy bean. All parts had to be 100% original, and a new type 911/73 engine, 915/00 gearbox, wheels, fuel tank, interior, body panels etc etc were required, all of which had to be sourced and would have come at huge cost - over 100k for the engine alone. My own recreation of the GeLo SR will likely be north of £200k with a shell in very good condition, plus we are using cases from a type 911/53 engine and a fair number of repro parts. Porsche also undertook many, many hours researching the car to ensure accuracy which I am doing myself but which they would have undoubtedly charged for.

The car today is probably worth around EUR 1.5 - 2 million given its exceptional provenance, so imo worth doing properly despite the cost.

Who in their right mind would pay that much?

Can't say I agree.
