Another visit to the Machine Shop.

Finally got the brackets working for my spot lights

I made some brackets to fit my oil catch tank to the 914. No more oil being breathed into the right carburettor.

Started to spray my timing bar. It will fit on the first bracket bolt and then under the bumper. There is a hole in it so that a cable tie will secure the front end to the bumper bracket

Took the dashboard out yesterday. I was disappointed not to find the VIN handwritten on the dash top panel as you sometimes see.



And started some plastic welding reinforced with stainless steel mesh across a crack - on the underside to start with. This is going to be a slow and drawn out process.

The dash paint looks pretty original, the painters mark is usually just scribbled on the black area above the instruments

There was no German number on my 73T dash top when i first took the dash top off, possibly the first time it was removed since installation despite the colour change from Condor Green to guards red somewhere in the mid 80's.

Looks nothing like my 1970 which had a fine over spray of the body colour. Rob's looks like it has been repainted with a heavy colour over the instruments. The instrument pinnacle should be black and there is no evidence of black over spray to the front edge of the dash.

Yes, same overspray seen here.



Although mine has a 10 on the offside and a zero in the centre. Maybe these are relevant digits from the VIN? Mine's a Karmann built body.

0 for 1970
10 could be for T, tan interior maybe? Not the code for signal orange.

Looks like you have the same lead in the bottom of the A pillars too.

How did you mask off the dash to blast the window edge? This will be my first time shotblasting.

The crayon number on the top of your dash would be the production number - same as stamped into the front of the dash behind the knee roll - not the VIN ...

That picture is after my metalwork, no lead, think it looks like it as it’s a bit shiny!

I didn’t blast anything on my car, all done with wire wheels and manual labour

I thickly masked off the paint on the dash so it would survive the full process so I had a reference for the paint colour.

Obviously some of the paint in the corners was redone as I had rust on both ends.
