I suppose I’m a philistine but I cannot get to like 356s, I’m 66 so maybe too young. They seem a funny shape and slow even by cars only ten years younger. And they have that putt putt putt sound.

having owned both, if you're buying for an all out driving experience, I tend to agree with you = 911 over 356. but if you're looking at it from the smiles per miles angle, 356 all the way.

I recently had the pleasure of driving a friends 2018 911 turbo. - it was absolutely bonkers fast, but at the same time, somewhat soulless when compared to my 'fighting to keep it on the road at 50' 356. horses for courses and once you go over a 100 grand ( which I assume will be the case for the very lovely 356 on offer here ), there's a lot to chose from.. a 190SL Merc for one...

also, you don't get the smell of an old car in a GT3.

p.s- I bought my first 356 at about 25-26 and my second about 11 years ago at about 37 ( which I still have )

The 356A is a very different experience to my 911. I love them both but with the way traffic is and the way people drive, the 356 takes a fair bit more concentration and can be quite stressful as it feels more delicate and its not as quick and doesn't brake as well. Personally I feel I have to pick my moments in the 356 more than with the 911....i.e. early mornings, avoid motorways etc. So I find I am driving it less and less which isn't good.

I think 60s cars are beyond being a nostalgic buy now. Those that lusted after them in their 20s are now in their 70s have either got one, had one or don’t want one.

My hope is that this reducing demand softens prices so enthusiasts can afford them again.

That certainly appears to be happening with E Types and MGBs and such, but those are more plentiful.

Is that ever true, and with my Boxster, the 911 is left for high days only now. Used to drive 3000 miles every year, not about 1000.

Driving today in a sports car has become a hassle, people just HAVE to prat around with you.
Just got home after a simple errand in the Boxster using local country lane, terrible surfaces, pot hole and cyclists having a good fast ride.
Got hassled from behind by someone in a Toyota iQ, lowered, wide wheels and with Barman stickers on the bonnet badge and doors.

I slowed to not overtake the cyclist on a narrow lane/junction and the iQ saw this as a major violation to his liberty, flashing lights and 'stormed' of down a narrower road.

Just what possesses some people to drive this way, BUT why would you put bright yellow Barman stickers on your car?
Maybe he was late to meet with Robin...

I've had quite different experiences - I can't think of any occasion over the past 12 (?) years since I've lived in the Midlands where another driver has 'cut me up' or behaved aggressively when I've been driving one of my 'older' cars.

Regarding the usability of a 356, although mine was a modified 'C' (& hence was a slightly more 'modern' model) I never felt underwhelmed by the performance (but I very rarely travelled on motorways) - you just need to adopt a slightly different driving approach ...

My experience is the same as Andy’s, folk often go out of their way to let me out of turnings when I’m in older stuff. Even the 964. Cheery waves aplenty.
