The gearbox for my USA LHD 1970 911T is indicated in the paperwork as: 911/01 5 7:31 S A GA O V ZA.
Upon driving the car for the first time today (3m up my drive) I found first gear in the left hand of the selector, where you have to push left against the reverse spring in order to find it. This didn't seem right. Also, if the handbrake lever's up it interferes with the gear knob in 1st gear. Does this all sound as it should? I would imagine first gear to be the last gear you'd want hitting the handbrake, since it's the one gear you're likely to use on hill starts etc., when the handbrake is applied.
Is 915 gearbox first gear in a crazy position?

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

????? Your car doesn't have a 915 gearbox - assuming it's a five-speed, it has a 911/01 which is a revised version of the 901, still with the dog-leg first gear.

And you should indeed have to push against resistance to select 1st, it’s straight down from reverse.
The linkage can be adjusted under the plate between the rear seats so it doesn’t travel as far backwards before engaging. There are plenty of threads on Pelican Parts and vids on You Tube.
