I used a 2.0 flywheel 901.102.026.01 with a 2.0 clutch, 914 (901) box and Sachs 3151.132.132 clutch release bearing. I guess that a 2.2 flywheel would work OK with a matched starter- the early starter fitted my car OK.

Hi Paul,
The 2.2 flywheel will bolt right up to the 2.7 (6 bolts), but it’s the clutch where you might get stuck, this depends on what 901 box you have.
The 70-71 911(901) gearbox which was a development of the 901 box and was used for years 70/71 only (2.2’s), was also the first to use the 225mm clutch plate/flywheel and the only gearbox to use the engineering marvel that is the 70/71 clutch cable mechanism. So if your 901 box is a 911 then you can use all the 2.2 clutch/presure plate, t/o bearing, ring gear etc. and it will work fine, it worked fine with my Carrera 3.0. What’s the gearbox number? maybe we can tell you what box you have.
Is yours is deffo a pull type 901, if so it sounds like you’ve got a 2.0 901 box, in which case then I think they’ll only work with the 2.0 215mm clutch & flywheel. this might be where you‘re getting stuck. as above the 2.2 flywheel is 225mm
Hope this helps.

Hello again.
The best way to go is to use the 915 box which was introduced to take the troque of the 2.4L motors..it bolts straight to the 2.7L clutch as its was desgned for it..
The big 915 clutch is also much cheaper and stronger than the early ones..
A 901 will not be reliable with a 2.7!
Kind regards
david

ps I'll echo what David says, whislt the 911(901) & 2.2 parts will function and handle the HP, reliability will eventually become an issue because of the extra Torque from the 2.7, I never realised how much torquier they were. it's for this same reason I'll be putting a 915 into my car with the 3.0.
bit of info for you.....the max input limit for a 901 is supposed to be about 19mkg/(138 lb/ft), the 2.7 produces 24mkg(175 lb/ft)
Hope this helps & good luck

gearboxes
Torque and Horsepower the old chestnut.
For a given rpm a higher horsepower motor must produce more torque the relationship is fixed and can't be altered.
I agree with David that even a well modified 2 litre will cause a 901 some problems.

I always though it was odd that the engine that was re-built by Wayne Dempsey for his engine building book (around 220BHP IIRC) was put into an RS rep. running a 901 box: and shown in the book.
I thought at the time it was strange that he seemed to be approving a known weak combination.
What 2.7 is it that was going in (BHP)?

it looks like we have the solution in hand, originally the bus was running the 2.7 through a vw bus gearbox and was just too low geared, so the man in question wanted to go for the 5 speed 901 box... as we progressed through the project we have discovered all sorts oof info regarding early boxes.
our final solution is:- we are keeping our modified vw fly wheel (which has been machined to match the 911 crank) bolting that to the 2.7 ltr motor. then using a 2100lb vw comp clutch mating it to the early 901 box, using a couple of small spacers to move the fulcrum postion of the clutch release arm to the correct place.... it all seems to work.
results tomorrow.
