Hub & bearing puller

This partly duplicates my 'Parts Wanted' post elsewhere in the forum but does everyone use the Porsche special tools or is there a generic hub/bearing puller I can buy for a reasonable price? And if anyone has a used one for sale, please PM me!

What for? The front hubs come off and you can drift the races out. Ditto use a big hammer on the back.

I assume you mean the rears?

The usual thing is to make one..not much work with a lathe..slide hammer to pull it, and big threaded rod to put back in..

Thanks gentlemen. I tried the 'big hammer' technique on a spare arm. It took a lot of bashing and seemed to me that it was pretty distructive.

I don't have access to a lathe David. Could probably get a local workshop to do something for me but what spec do I need to give them please?

Also, it is probably obvious once I have the tools to hand but is it intended to drift the hub out or what? Sorry if this is all too basic but I want to do the job with the minimum of damage!

Are the arms on or off the car? Mine were off and I struggled for days to get the fronts out but the backs took 15 mins. Just wacked them out with a club hammer and an old chisel and screwdriver. I imagine they're impossible to do on the car though

Hello there.

The hub is pulled out with a slide hammer bolted to the studs..then the bearing is pulled out with a plate and screw..

The bearing is pushed in with a simple buit big screw(ooo-er missus) and a plate to fit the bearing, and the hub is pushed in with it too..

There are loafdsa pictures etc on Pelican..

I had the exact opposite Nick. The fronts were simple. At the moment I still have one of the rear arms on and one off. I 'practiced' on another old arm and ended up beating hell out of it before I got the stub off. I thought there had to be a kinder way and my workshop manual shows a special tool/drift, hence my post. I like what David says about using a slide hammer - just need to sort out a suitable end piece.

Thanks David. I had looked on the Pelican site but had not found anything in the Tech Articles. Now looked again and see a 930 article which I guess is the one you were refering to? Had also seen the Hub bearing extractor/installer tool kit they sell but with carriage & duty that is going to cost around £250! Will have to take some measurements and get an adaptor made up to go with a slide hammer.............

Bob I tackled this job a couple of years ago, and have a slide hammer with suitable hub attachment. I also fabricated a bearing puller to get the bearing out of the arm once youve removed the hub.

You're welcome to borrow both if you can make it to the wilds of south london!

Appreciate the offer Gavin but I decided to bite the bullet and bought myself a large slide hammer which did the job - although it did take me longer than expected! I haven't started replacing the bearings yet, been busy on another job.
