Kids in the back seats of a classic 911/912?
So I have two little ones, aged 7 and 3 and would like to be able to take them out in the back of the 912 occasionally but am struggling to decipher if this is even possible.
The gov website states that you must use child seats or booster seats up to age 12 or 135cm tall, it also states that child seats can only be used with diagonal belts. The only get out seemingly being that if the car is not fitted with belts you obviously cannot fit child seats at all.
My car has factory static lap belts fitted in the rear, does this mean I can legally only cram an adult in the back seat or am I covered by the fact that it hasn’t got diagonal belts so therefore the only option is to use the original back seats/belts without specific child seats fitted?
Would appreciate peoples thoughts and how others have overcome this problem.

Legally it’s grey, but I wouldn’t use a lap only restraint for a child (or ideally anyone!).
Maybe it’s worth looking at three (or four) points as you’ve got a few years left yet before they grow out of the car.
I used a Sabelt static race harness with a central mounting point for both high back and booster seats for my two kids.
Can barely get them through the door of the car now let alone the back seats!

I put 3 points in the back for my girls when they were little. As Gary says, there was no way I was going to have them in with just lap belts

Thanks for your input both, tis much appreciated, and yes totally agree lap belts are less than ideal.
So how difficult is it to fit either 3 point belts or harnesses to a 69 912?
James, were the 3 point ones you fitted static or inertia reel?

Inertia ... quickfitsbs supplied one of them and the other was from a 993 ( did one side 3 years before the other ) Needed to drill the parcel shelf ( using a 90deg attachment on the drill ) and use a spreader plate .

I must confess we did lots of miles with lap belts with my kids

Im probably out of order by modern thinking but twenty five years ago I just popped my kids into the back of my 72 S no belts at all as none were fitted. It was a very rare happening and for short trips to events etc
Im not sure on the effectiveness of lap belts versus no belts in the rear of a 911. wonder has there been any testing results published?
The back seats of an early 911 are not a good Place to be in an accident, belts or not. It’s very tight back there and egress would be difficult and slow.

I had QuickfitSBS fit seat belts in the rear of my 911E. Worked well when the kids were small enough. You have to watch their height as there isn’t a lot of headroom. They sat either on a small booster that fitted o to the well or on the base itself.
The force is strong in this one ......

Surely the ‘period correct’ way for a small child to travel is stood in the back on the centre tunnel hanging on to the front seats?

I used a set of these in the back of the 356, and in the Austin 7 Trials car, they are a proper bit of kit, and I now see they do a 5 point set too. Mounted as a race harness would normally go. Highly recommended.

I installed points on the rear shelf for a 'top tether' and used the lap belts with child seats designed to take them. They weren't going to go anywhere, their spew however went everywhere - on more than one occasion - so we put a stop to that, they've never been back.
Re: Kids in the back seats of a classic 911/912?
Joelipol, I’m hoping to avoid any spewing, my next thread may be for period correct sick bag install suggestions.
Winston, how did you install the harnesses, presume it’s a case of drilling the parcel shelf and fitting spreader plates similar to James 3 pointers?

In the 356 the seat pans are outside skins, so drilled through at the 'sides' and fitted nut spreader plates and the back panel had already been drilled for belts previously......I'll try some pics...W

The important thing about the greenpoweer harness is that the lap strap is a suitable width for children's shoulders.....Adult harnesses are too baggy. W

Re: Kids in the back seats of a classic 911/912?
My personal view is that harnesses are a bad idea for young kids. Firstly they are not made for kids' dimensions do hard to get right. Then kids are not made for harnesses other than in proper kids seats.
