Tyres

Two additional Christmas presents have come to light in the form of nails - one in each rear tyre!

Now the quandary - the S02's have about 3-4mm tread left and are not losing pressure, but I'm very wary. I think the tyres might be about 5 years old (some minor cracking) and, being Z rated, cannot be repaired (can they?). Plus, with the car being so low I keep "catching" sleeping policemen. Current sizes are 205/55 x 15 (front) and 225/50 x 15 (rear) on 7"/8" rims.
I 'think' I'd like to go to the right sizes for the car (RS replica) and for the rims, and to hopefully get another half-inch or so clearance.
So..........what's the 'right' size? I think 185/70 x 15 and 215/60 x 15 'V' rated? - am I right? And what recommendations for manufacturer/type? On a limited mileage per year (~4000) I'd be happy to "go cheap" and replace every year rather than have tyres go old on me. I have followed hot66's thread on 185/70's and realise that they're scarce, but 195/65 is close.

If it helps I have two 205/55's and two 225/50's with about 3mm tread left which you can have if you can think of some way of collecting. They came off my RS when I switched to the correct sized Avons.

I think the Avons are good so far. Not been in the wet too often but they seem good in the dry. Ask Pmjt too. He and I have exactly the same tyres(coincidence) and he may give a you a better idea as he is a more spirited driver than me as you know

I'll be in Carlisle next Thursday (12th) assuming the powers that be don't change their minds. Can usually manage to get away by 4.30pm and not averse to travelling in the wrong direction (i.e. North).

Driving me nuts trying to work my way through the various tyre possibilities. Only had the car (72 911E) a few months and I want a good road tyre that won't embarass me on a track day or two. Lifetime not that important since annual mileage will be low. Looking at 195/60/15 at the front and 205/60/15 at the rear I seem to be ending up with:

Avon ZV3
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-03
Toyo Proxes CF1

or even Michelin Pilot Primacy.

Views on any of those gratefully recieved !!

IMHO, the early cars look better on the higher profile.

I run 195/65's all round ( these give as near as possible to the tyre wall height of the original 185/70's). I have Verdtein Sportracs tyres and have been very pleased. Performed very well on the track @ Cadwell and been very pleased on the road. I must admit the rears wore pretty quick on the back but I put this down to my driving technique

Ended up with 195/65 and 225/60 Kumho KH11's on mine. Pleased so far and the extra ground clearance (about 10mm) is reassuring as my car is set very low. Search for tyres was completed via a local (York) tyre shop, who were more than helpful. These higher profiles also look great - to my eyes anyway.
I've used Vredestein Sportrac before (on an 80's 3.2) and was pleased with those.
