7R Rear Wheels

Hi everyone

I am slowly trying to get my rhd ‘72 back on the road. It’s had various work and currently the engine is out and in a bit of a queue to get rebuilt.

Currently the rear arches are RS but I want to put them back to narrow body. However the 2.4L engine was bored out by Bob Watson to 2.7L pushing 250bhp, so I’m planning on rolling the arches just enough to fit wider wheels. I think flat 6’s all around with 250bhp might be a disaster

So I was thinking of Flat 6‘s on the front and Flat 7’s on the rear. I was interested in people thoughts on that given the narrow body look I want to achieve.

Working to the assumption that flat 7’s are right for the car, does anyone have any advice on getting a set of rears. I know there are some nice repros available, or a set of flat 6 could be widened, or should I spend the time souring original? Also, any steer on what price you’d pay for them?

As you doubtless know, 7Rs have the extra inch of width on the "inside", so if a car runs deeps 6s and 7R, the wheel position looks the same from the outside. Hence no change to narrow body look.
I run that spec on both my narrow body cars ('69 and '70), with small spacers front and rear, rolled arches, and longer studs. Like it.
BTW you said flat 6, but 7Rs are actually like wider deep 6s, not flat 6s.

Original 7Rs are not very hard to find, but are a bit spendy...

Thanks. Really helpful, and I expect I am using the wrong terms, as you’ve suggested.

I love the look of flat 6’s and that’s the look I’d like to achieve. So working on the basis of therefore flat 6’s on the front, what would be the matching rear? Are all 7’s deep, or is there a flat 7 to visually match having flat 6 on the front?

I’m hoping that makes sense and I’m not making things worse

So there is no thing as a flat 7?

I believe there is someone that converts deep 6 to a deep 7, I assume they could therefore also convert a flat 6 to a flat 7?

From the video and associated commentary, I'm pretty certain that car has deep 6 fronts, 7R rears.

I see what you were suggesting that that 7R match the deep 6 fronts.

Seems to be that deep 6 starting prices are about £500 each, depending on condition.

Any idea how much I’d be looking at for a 7R? I saw EB motorsport 7R reps are £1900+VAT a pair!!

Originals in good condition are not cheaper, generally.
Quite often for sale on early S, worth a search of past adverts to get an idea of asking prices.

I’ve got deep sixes, flat sixes and 7R’s available. They are all originals.

I have four deep sixes needing refurbished but all date match so would make a nice set when refurbished. £625 each.
I have two deep sixes Biagio refurbished and never had tyres mounted. Ready to fit and beautiful. £1200 each
I have two 7R’s as in the picture above. Driver quality or better but not refurbished. Original finish. £2000 each.
I have four flat sixes needing refurbished. I think they are matching dates but would need to check. £550 each.
I have the best stubby valves to fit the deep sixes and 7R’s. Not available separately to the wheels.
I don’t have centre caps but I do have several brand new Avon tyres to fit any of the above in various sizes and compounds. All a few years old but never used. Various prices depending on size.
I can get the tyres fitted and balanced to any combination of wheels so you are ready to go or I can send wheels needing refurbished direct to you or Biagio.
Postage at cost to the UK only.

- it was my old '73 2.4 E/S which was lowered but had uprated (stiffer) torsion bars, increased negative camber & 'rolled' arches.
