What did you do in/on/for your Porsche today?

I know, I feel I let the side down. But I did only use one bucket and one sponge – none of this multi-bucket, mutli-sponge nonsense. And it was cheap polish on sale in Halfords.

Don't worry, that 'polish' will wash off in 3 wash's time...

We all know the £5000 a tub stuff is the only one that works, says so on the tin, must be right.
Re-assuringly Expensive etc.

Ordered a pile of parts to service the 911, all the oily bits and will re-use my old clay bar after a single bucket, hose pipe, microfibre wash (no tooth brush needed as my panel gaps are good and wide and a little uneven, it is a nasty hot rod after all.

Plugs changed 10 or 15 years ago. Dist cap unmarked, rotor arm too, bet the plugs that come out are perfect.

The 130K mile old 3.2 is a darling, never been apart. Be a sad day when it finally cries enough.

I have just fitted the Steering Wheel that I recently had by trimmed by Garry (ClassicFX). It is a 380mm Wheel). It is a plastic rimmed 914 wheel dated 12 / 73 and part number 914 347 804 11. Close in principle to the factory RSR donor wheel I assume.

Garry trimmed directly over the plastic rim in a thicker (than normal) leather.

I am really pleased with the end result, the feel / grip of the wheel is exactly what I wanted. It is not “modern” thick rimmed (grip circumference is circa 80mm) and it is firm enough to transmit all the early 911 live steering feel. Cannot wait for the very muddy lanes out of our village to improve so that I can get out and try it properly!

Definitely looking forward to trying it and it looks just right.

I have a standard 400m wheel with a thin leather rim, bought from Bill Goodman back in the day, off his well-known hill climb 911T. I alternated between that and a 340mm Jackie Stewart logoed MoMo which looked great but was far too small, I fitted a 360mm modern Prototipo but it never felt quite right (lacked a bit of feedback) so went back to the 400mm. I have a modern 360mm Prototipo on the rally car and I am very happy with that, it works well in that environment – possibly because of the stiff side walled gravel tyres and the way the car is set up.

Gave the 911 with a 3.2 an engine service with a short cut.

Changed all the usual things
Plugs, about 20K miles old, came out with a nice biscuit colour and gaps still at 0.7mm, new back in.
Rotor arm looked perfect, but new back in.
Fuel filter was last changed in early 2017, so after the petrol flood, new back in and date marked.
Air filter, stock, fancy ones not worth it, and looked clean as a whistle, but new went back in.

Oil out and had a major spillage...
Filter came of after a real wrestle, defeated my enviable arsenal of filter removing tools so got a 1/2" steel bar in and that did the trick. Always awkward.
New back in of course and fresh Shell, date added to filter .

Both drain plugs clean, no debris in either, nice, Really good for a 140K ish mile stock engine.

Switched on, turned it over and while the fuel filled the filter the oil filter filled and Vrrroooom, of it started just as it always does.
Topped the oil to mid-way hot and job done.
Didn't do the tappets, the short cut.

£143 all in, free labour.

Stay at home finishes end March.

I too have just changed the oil (VR1) and filter however Graham's post prompted me to change the fuel filter as well.
It looked very manky when I cut it open and it was a bit slimy too. I am surprised any fuel was getting through.

For all the years that I have owned the car up until last year I have done lots of miles every year but last year it was not much more than 1000 miles. That means that the fuel could be really old now and maybe not that nice. My plan is now to run the tank down to the minimum and then fill up with the super smart Esso fuel that is ethanol free and then try to use that as much as I can so that apart from anything else next time I change the filter it might look a bit better.

David Jones a 356 chap, and ex petrol industry professional, is always telling people on the registry to not worry about old petrol.

Hi Neil
The trouble is that I do not know what they are supposed to look like but this was very dense and a bit slimy so it did not seem all that good to me. And a bit like the one Graham replaced it was from 2017ish.

The reason I am looking at it is that there is a slight misfire which is getting better as I get through the fuel but was quite pronounced to start with.

I have not yet driven with the new filter although I did start the engine and check for leaks.

Put the 911 away in late Sept thinking the steering o be quite leavened.
Drove it yesterday and thought how light it was!
Good to be in a no power assisted car!
