Wiring Loom help
Hello....
Still stripping my 69t and waiting for better weather. When I eventually get back from Brazil I’m going to continue with strip down.
I little concerned with using / refitting the old wiring loom once the car is eventually painted. Obviously 50+ years old. What are my options here?
Anyone purchased a complete wiring loom lately especially a 69 version?
Anyone have an idea of cost?
Problem I have is 69 is one year only. Guess there not worth repairing?
Both Kroon and YNZs in States want my old loom in exchange.
Waiting on quote from Kroon but YNZs was £3000.
Thanks Lee

Re: Wiring Loom help
There was a recent program of Wheeler Dealers where Brewer had a front loom for a TR7 hand made in the UK.
Might be worth taking a look to see if you can spot who they were at those prices.

Re: Wiring Loom help
Hello buddy,
Working as a drilling logistics superintendent for Exxonmobil. Was living in Ipanema For the first year then moved to Niteroi. I’m now in Barra De Tijuca operating crew changes for Covid protocol.
It’s a nightmare with all this Covid going on. Then the isolation period when you get home. I’m thinking of staying longer to avoid travelling but really want to get back and work on the car. I’ve had more things up my nose then a drug dealer. Covid PCR’s that is!
And obviously can’t wait to see the family and dog ha ha...
Thanks Lee

Re: Wiring Loom help
I think that depends. I've only seen four or five looms up close, so I'm no expert, but on each one I was pretty impressed with the quality of the original item and how well it had lasted. All had issues in some areas, including localised areas where the insulation was very suspect (heat damage I think).leedurrant73 wrote:Hello....

For my '70 car I concluded that, with a decent donor loom also on hand, there was nothing that a fair bit of patience and effort couldn't fix.
This was my little hobby for a while:
https://www.safetycolours.com/porsche-9 ... iring-loom
I felt it was important to remove all the wrapping, to inspect the state of the insulation of every wire along its entire length, but having done that and replaced the brittle / dodgy bits (often with good bits of the donor loom, so the wiring colours / markings looked right) I don't lose sleep over my 50 year old loom. Feel free to laugh at me when it catches fire, but for now I reckon it was £3K+ saved, a bit more originality preserved, quite a lot of knowledge gained, and I didn't have to take the risk of letting my original loom out of my sight.
Just my 2p, obvs! Good luck.

Re: Wiring Loom help
Thanks for all the replies.
Just to let you know Kroon have come back with a total cost of £2750 for complete loom but with mine as a donor.
Thanks Lee

Re: Wiring Loom help
I think, unless your loom is damaged beyond repair, or want a shiny new one, there should be no reason not to re-use the existing loom. I base my thoughts on the good state of my own 1973 loom, which is perfectly fine, and 30+ years electrical/electronic engineering experience.
It would be a good idea to do a continuity check on every single wire from end to end (use croc clips on a multimeter + give the cable a wiggle to see if continuity is interrupted), and ideally clean up every connection (not essential, as the connectors will bite into the wire or terminal when inserted). Might be a good idea to remove the wrap and eyeball for damage, but again not really necessary if continuity is good. If the wrap is in poor condition though.....
As crazy as it might sound, soaking the ends of the wires, and even whole connectors, in a solution of salt and vinegar will remove most of the tarnish and oxide from the connections. Emery paper or fine sandpaper will work too. A fibre pen also does 'something', but is hard work in my opinion. Individual bad wires can be replaced as long as you can get the connectors open (I havent tried, so I dont know this one).
I just looked up the temperature in Brazil and its 26 deg - lucky so and so!

Maybe try:
The Wiring Harness Company

Sounds like you send them your loom, and they match it.

Re: Wiring Loom help
I would give the diy approach a go, I rebuilt mine and have done a few looms in the past of various kit cars but I am no electrical wizard. They are not that complex and with a decent coloured copy of the wiring diagram its not that hard, just take your time.
I started with the original loom but has most of a spare so I could replace plugs etc that werent in good shape. I do have most of the loom that is around the dashboard I think for a 69 car and a lot of spare round plugs if you do go down that route drop me a PM

Re: Wiring Loom help
I have heard good things about Kroon. They require your loom for some of the plugs which are unavailable new as repros. Like others here, I do think cleaning it up and repairing where necessary is fine. I didn't have or need any spare looms when I did mine, just replacement wires, pvc tubing and tape. Here is a link to mine:

Re: Wiring Loom help
Well.... my car was running with it but it’s looking tired in places. Plus my car was a sporto adapted to a manual so probably some redundant plugs.
I’ve got the get the car stripped during the summer. Norfolk premier Coachworks will do the metalwork and probably get them to removed it when the engine and gearbox comes out.
Thanks
