Following along with interest as I am also contemplating a proper watch in 2021 at a similar budget. The trouble is that I don't know anything about watches at all which makes me think I'm not even qualified to own a nice one! I also have very "delicate" wrists so can't really do a big watch.

I did previously have a Breitling navitimer which I quite liked, but in the end I sold it as it was big and I couldn't read it!! I'm also tempted by an older watch, I don't know why! As an example, this appeals...

Graham I will have this rare linen dial Rolex 6426 Oyster Precision back from service in next week or so and it will be for sale.

It’s a 34mm case (36mm incl crown) so suitable for those with smaller wrists!

OK, I'm preparing to duck, before I even ask.... but I am interested in opinions before doing something irreversible (but in the name of making something more usable)

I have for many years owned a C.1917 Royal Flying Corp 30hr 'cockpit clock' - essentially a pocket watch with a long stem to enable it to be clipped into a holder on the instrument panel.

The thing is, it's a lovely thing (exactly as the one in the first photo within the article text, but non-luminous, and without the loop on the stem), but not really all that handy. I barely even take it out the watch box, let alone use it.

You can get leather over straps that enclose pocket watches to make them more usable, but they are then even larger and it's all a bit, well, 'steampunk' for my liking.

I was wondering if it would be heresy to have a jeweler solder on a couple of silver lugs onto the case back so I could fit a simple strap? It would still be a heavy old thing, but it might get the occasional outing.

But if I did that, the winding neck is still very long - how practical would it be to have a watchmaker reduce the length?

Or is that too much to inflict on something like that, and with such an interesting origin?

Any thoughts? It's the sort of thing that probably happened to loads of them in the past, but would you do it now?

ETA, this is the watch that has stopped working to be clear!

what dia & thickness is it ? My gut feel is youre going to struggle not to have the steam punk vibe if you wear it on your wrist purely due to its size

Yup, there's not getting away from the fact that at 50mm dia, and 15mm thick, it'd be no slimline dress watch

still, I tend to wear my watch inside my wrist though, so on the rare occasions I wore it I'd not kill any small children I knocked with it in passing, and it might still be better than just lying in the box.

It makes my Tag Heuer 'Targa-Florio' re-issue look dinky
