When I first went to Le Mans, my press pass allowed me access right up to the Armco – as long as you didn't touch it, you were fine. You could lean over as much as you wanted, but just don't touch it. The marshalls would bang on the Armco with a big stick if they saw you even brushing against it. You could shoot cars with a 24mm wide-angle lens and virtually fill the frame – now everybody has to use tele lenses. I don't know a single old school photographer who wouldn't be happy to sign a form absolving the track of any responsibility if we could have that free access again...

Notice the rubber wheel nut remover! How does it undo tight nuts?

I went to Le Mans in 87 working for the 96 club hospitality. In the middle of the night my boss told me and another worker, Steph, to take a few slabs of beer from the coldstore, get the (white) van and go towards the golf club, and try and blag access to the service road at the foot of the embankment on the outside of the approach to Indianapolis...."the guys on the gates will love the beer......"
Sure enough every gate opened and we took a van through....we lay on the bank with our heads under the armco, with our fingers in our ears watching the cars racing blind in thick fog at dawn......an amazing experience that i will never forget, no camera, just a vivid memory......RIP Scotty, i miss you!
