bit of a beginner question, but is there a good brand of strap - good, but not super expensive. Looking for brown leather and my ruler says 17mm wide.

Yes, looking at the website from Neil (thanks Neil), I was concluding that 17 wasn't a common size. Will check some more before ordering!

Have a look at Everest straps. Pretty well put together, but not overly cheap! I bought my strap for my Rolex, ( leather ) from Ebay. Pretty well made and cost 17 quid! - I was after a particular colour ( to match my belt ... I know, sad eh? ). And am happy with the quality.

I should say, I my strap isn’t an Everest one, not for 17 quid, that’s for sure !

Well the internet (watchstrapworld) thinks my Tag Heuer 4000 mid-size model is an 18mm strap, but measuring doesn't convince me that 18mm would fit. Need to work out how to get the strap out to get my caliper in properly to measure.

Right the strap is off. The gap for the strap on the watch is absolutely 17mm but it looks like the strap could well be 18mm that has been persuaded to fit. I think I'll go for a new 17mm strap and see how it fits.

And while I am here to finish off the exciting topic of my strap, I bought and fitted a 17mm strap which fitted perfectly!

Yes. Even your friend Arno, in his recent interview, got asked about which models to buy for future profit. I think it was out of spirit with the interview. I also think it's strange that a passion collector who researches his watches is looking into the past but that doesn't give them a crystal ball.

However, his reply was fair. Lots of new variants to still find.

Ive got a few Scurfa’s but this Bell Diver watch just isn’t getting any wrist time
as aesthetically it’s too similar to my daily SD50 .

Only really worn once . Great automatic diving watch with ceramic bezel. It is a large watch.

I think it might be time to get a nice watch. I’m feeling relatively flush at the moment but due to my general fickleness in the whole going to work thing I would like something that at least holds its value in case I need to sell it in a hurry to pay my drug dealer or mortgage lender.

My criteria is:

Less than £5,000.
Fancy to those in the know but not super shouty to all and sundry.
Simple and Modern in design.

I’m happy to buy used rather than new and want to wear it often rather than tuck it away for best.

Current favourite is a Panerai Luminor of some sort.

Other things I like the design of include German things like the Nomos Metro and Bell and Ross things in general. Stuff I don’t fancy includes fiddly chronos like Breitling do or Heuer Autavias and anything with Roman numerals.

Suggestions gratefully received.

A PAM is a big watch for your slender wrists Sam ... best to try one on first

If you like German watches have a look at SINN ... although best to buy used if retaining value is important. They have a design for everyone.

£5k would almost get you into a new Rolex explorer1 if you want something subtle ... or maybe a Rolex OP. You might have to play the game with the Rolex AD’s though
