Which petrol for a 2.4L MFI

Post by Garrett »

Cringeingly fundamental question: I'm putting Shell Optima ( Irsh brand name, I think its the same in the UK) 94 RON unleaded petrol in my tank, any views on fuel: as is/ +lead additive, which brand etc?

94 Ron seems abit low for optima. I'm sure its something like 98 or 99 Ronalds here.

Boggo standard unleaded is 96

I have always had the understanding that unleaded is fine in them apart from really early 356s? The US has had only unleaded since the mid 70s I think, so almost all imported US Porsches will have been running on unleaded.

Porsche originally specified that model '72 onward (MFI) cars should run on 87 octane fuel (kind of hard to come by these days!) You should try and use as low octane as you can because it ignites easier.

You don't need to use lead additives for a '73 S.

Any pics of your car by the way?

as Will says , use standard unleaded. The 2.4's were designed to run on crappy low octane USA fuel

Well, as they say on some daft ad or another, that's one less thing to worry about. Cheers for the replies.

Yup, can only second regarding the octane level: just use standard unleaded.

However, I noticed that with a higher octane my mpg went sligtly up from 27 to 31 mpg and she seemed to run a wee bit quieter. (mix of motorways and fast B roads)

Like the car: ace!
