Valuation of RHD 1959 356A help needed

Post by drew01356 »

Hi Guys
The turmoil of the last couple of months has made me re-evaluate my current long list of projects, so I’m thinking of letting one go but have no idea of value.
Here is the spec:
1959 RHD 356A super coupe, original UK AFN delivery car.
Matching original super engine, rebuilt
I think the gearbox is original but will have to check
98% complete with many restored parts and replacement sheet metal
All original running gear and red interior
Even has it’s original 400mm (smaller) steering wheel as listed on the Certificate of Authenticity
This is not a driver, it will need all the usual rot repairs but would make a great car when complete, it’s original colour was Aquamarine Blue.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I won't bother guessing, more expert people will be along to do that soon I'm sure.

I think the value may well depend on the extent of the rot, and repairs needed so maybe more images of that?

But I'd like to register interest please!
James.

I had this dilemma a few months back.
Unfortunately there aren’t too many RHD projects to compare with.
Your gut should give you some idea though.
There is a RHD that has just popped up on eBay, totally stripped, in the U.S. and with a starting bid of £20,000 reserve not met.
I don’t think eBay is the place to sell such a specialised car, not many people actually have the funds to buy or even restore our cars.
PM me and I can let you know what I think.
I am by no means an expert, but having just sold a RHD project I can let you know how I found things.
It doesn't matter if you speak your mind, because those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter.......!
Lusting after a 30/98, will settle for a 23/60.

The opportunity to own a car like this doesn't come up very often, I'm sure you'll get plenty of interest. Aquamarine blue and red has got to be the best combination for an A Coupe.

One way to value the car would be to establish how much it would be worth when restored then work out how much it would cost to get it restored.

What could be easier.

Hagerty offers valuations for a 1959 356 Super in various conditions, from £ 72.5k for a fair example up to £ 245k for a concours car.

https://www.hagerty.co.uk/valuation/too ... er&b=Coupe

The difficult bit is working out the cost of restoring the car to any one of those conditions but by my ready reckoning, if it cost £30k to get it to condition 2, your car's worth £70k

If it cost £45k to make it 'excellent', then the cars worth £80k

If it could be made concours for £60k your'e on to a winner. :)

Good luck.

.

I'd speak to Mike/Paul at PRS - they've probably got more experience than anyone else about actual selling prices of 356's - especially RHD models - in all conditions from 'projects' to concours.

They may even have potential buyers lined up ...

Hi guys
Thank you all for your replies, private messages and even phone calls (thanks Paul & Mike), seems that there is quite a bit of interest in RHD 356A’s.
I have checked the gearbox and although it is the correct 644 dual mount box it is numbered 17435 not 23177 as per the COA (so not numbers matching).
It’s been pointed out to me that there are couple of RHD projects for sale in the UK at the moment.
1958 RHD 356A Normal Coupe - £98,000
https://borderreivers.co/portfolio/porsche-356a-rhd-4/
1959 RHD 356A Normal Coupe - £72,000
https://www.thornleykelham.com/sales/19 ... d-coupe-2/
I’m not suggesting for a minute that my car is worth these sort of figures but it’s interesting to see what’s out there.
A few people have asked to come over and see the car but I have decided to take a few weeks to pull it into the workshop and retrieve all the parts that are squirrelled away all over the house.
I will post on here when it is ready to be viewed and will also take plenty of photos and a full inventory of parts for those who have expressed an interest.
In the mean time I have taken a picture of the original engine as it is now (it will be complete with all tin, heat exchangers and exhaust ready to fire up).

Thanks again.

Drew,
644 dual mount box it is numbered 17435 not 23177
I have 26177 for your car - Is it me or you that are incorrect

17435 came out of 102 356

Hi Mike/Paul
I hope you are all safe and well.
I bow to your expert knowledge (still up for helping out on your RHD registry project).
It seems that the COA is incorrect 23177 and is actually in the USA (when you search the 356 registry) so it seems that the UK records are not that accurate.
However the gearbox is not original to the car so has an affect on the the overall value.
I will give you a call next week to discuss.

Drew,

I see your car has been sold and likely for a pretty good deal ( for the buyer ). May I ask, was he/she someone on DDK? - I'd look forward to reading a resto thread on this.

I see you have plenty of 356's. I too have one, but a lowly B!!. I'm just round the corner from you in Walton on the Hill, so after all this madness, I'd love to meet up for a beer and see your lot :D

Many thanks
Joe

Hi Joe
The new owner is not a regular DDK guy but was tipped off by a member, not sure if we will get updates here but I have promised to go and see the restoration progress and will hopefully post some updates here.
Please don't wait for this madness to subside before meeting up.
My mobile is 07775811204 call anytime.

Thanks Drew. I'll give you a call!. By the way - I mis-typed - its a 'B', not an 'A'. Had an 'A' a long time ago, just after leaving university... sold it to buy a house ( 12 grand, was to be used as a deposit ) and never bought the house! - typical. Anyway - will ping you soon!

Cheers
Joe
