James P - thanks, it really wants to go. It drives so nicely I’m totally amazed how good it is. Am struggling a bit to get comfortable on a long journey but it is incredibly capable. Having done 550 miles at 3k revs I took it to 4K on the way back from the Indian to ensure it didn’t get cold and it just starts to come alive, so am looking forward to getting the next 500 out of the way before I can give it some more (these are my self imposed limits by the way). It certainly got plenty of attention on the road, and the shy and retiring colour seemed to invite people in interesting cars to try and provoke a race (whom we’re all clearly disappointed!)

James - thank you, had forgotten about that. I was set to order a m/c tomorrow as it is the one ‘old’ part in the system, but will check the pin first. Much appreciated

check th epin .. but in my case it was the slave cylinder & hose at the gearbox end that caused the pedal not to come all the way back

Pin is fine, hard-line down the car replaced, flexi replaced, slave cylinder looks brand new but I cannot find an invoice for it (or remember if I replaced, sadly, it is a blur of new parts). However the bleed nipple and rubber cover look brand new, and I would not have replaced these on their own, so need to check the invoices again as everything suggests it is new. So that leaves only the M/C as the culprit I think....

Tidying the workshop today I came across a box I'd almost forgotten about. A few years ago when I think it was cheaper to buy stuff from the States, I ordered a set of Drum Skinz from a company called Fibersteel.

You don't hear much about Fibersteel over here in the UK but they manufacture all manner of aftermarket things for 356 coupes Speedsters and 550 Spyders. They're the people that make Glasspar tops.

Drumskinz aren't quite as glamorous at Glasspar but they're not far off. They're drum brake covers, spun in aloominum that make your wheels look extra special. See below.

Today I fitted the {new to me) Turbo Thomas exhaust with no dramas. It's a nice piece of work, not a factory product but very much a hand made piece of stainless steel engineering.

My main concern was how it would sound. The old silencer box had been fitted when God was a boy and was full of carbon and I liked the dulcet tone. The story with SS exhausts is they sound tinny compared to mild steel and resonate very differently.

With everything tightened down I turned the key and even on tickover the new exhausts burbles really nicely. With a few revs it sounds like a whole new car but by then it was chucking it down outside so I put the road test off till the weekend.

Got up at 5.15 and went for a 70 mile drive on empty Cornish roads before getting back as the sun was starting to rise. Need to improve the headlights on the 914!

you can bolt in the LED sealed beam units easilly cant you ?

Probably - I hate modern-looking light unit in classics. The main problem is one of alignment as the beams are set way too low. I've also got an NOS pair of Cibié iode 45s in store...

Had a great Porsche day admittedly not in an early car at Croft. Managed to get booked on the day before as the weather forecast looked very favourable.
Anyway arrived and it was raining!!



Anyway what started as a wet morning slowly dried and by the time the lunch was upon us there was a dry line. I suppose improving grip levels is much preferred over decreasing grip levels. I actually really enjoyed the wet. Just had to be very careful in the braking zones as it was very easy to out brake yourself even when you thought you were being very conservative.



Anyway a good day had by all and the car ran faultlessly.

A break out- the back road from Cork to Kerry ( Priests Leap- mostly in thick fog ) Lauragh ( Helens bar closed) and Healy Pass. Only about 120 kms , 2 + hours- back to Mannings ( pic 1 ) for late lunch outside. Great to get out and talk to another human




Back road necessary to avoid Garda check point!!

At last got round to fitting the rear silencer box I bought from Alfietom.

Drove to Old Nun Forest for a walk. Turned the car when I got home with my new tuner. Gives a proper dwell angle and rpm measurement.
