Finish of fuel tanks on early cars

Hello

It looks like I'm going to have to replace the tank in my car (backdated 3.2 Carrera). Although it'll have to be a 3.2 tank, I might as well make it look like an early one. Are they painted or do they just go straight in the car in the black primer finish ? Presumably they have stone-chip underneath ?

Depends what year ? Eg mine is a plastic tank in the textured light grey

Thanks - sounds like the grey Schutz finish was used in the 70s and 80s cars so I'll go with that.

There is a grey 2-pack 3M stonechip that comes in a bag with components separated but are then mixed in the bag and applied using a schutz gun. I think it's a very good match. Used it on my '78 and it looked identical to my '73 which I believe is unrestored.

I used a Wurth product- spay it very dry and from a distance.
-looks good to me.
