Sportier exhaust options

I am thinking of swapping the standard back box on my car for something a bit fruitier. Engine is 2.7 MFI and I want to retain the original look rather then have twin outlets etc.

Has anyone tried something similar and have feedback? I just want a bit more noise and fun, don’t mind if it is a bit louder for touring duties etc.

Perhaps check out Turbo Thomas' products?
There is also a large dia outlet Dansk, but I have no personal experience of either.

If you just want a little bit more noise, something a bit ‘fruitier’, then a Dansk sport box will look the same as your standard one apart from a slightly bigger outlet at 84mm. I had one on mine before going to a TT one

If you’ve not tried it - remove the air box. Filters give the best sound on MFI motors in my view.

Thanks Ian. I just had a look again and I think I have a stainless steel (rather than mild steel) single outlet box with 70mm diameter outlet. I don't see an 84mm option for this car on the internet (Design911 etc). Only 84mm boxes are dual outlet. Do you have a link to the one you are referring to?

Good point Sam, that might be worth trying out. I thought the snorkel was supposed to direct cleaner / cooler air into the system, will the filters affect the fuelling etc? May get that looked into when in for a service.

Thanks Richard. I've been looking at those and there seems to be quite a few options from louder to really loud (115 dB might be pushing my luck with the neighbours). I was going to ask you which one you went for until I saw the "Richard Fry" model!!

Would be great to have a listen as hard to tell from the videos, they all sound good!

Since it's you I will waive my vast royalty. Mine is slightly custom but basically their middle loudness "super sound". It is pretty loud on throttle, but OK at a cruise.

I have a Dansk Sport single 84 mm outlet on my Weber fed 3.0 and it is a nice note without annoying the neighbours, I also have one of the twin centre outlets, there the two 50mm pipes are about 300mm apart and it I think is a tad noisier but still acceptable, it's like this one

In theory yes, you ought to get it set up if you change things, but I guess the same would apply with the exhaust.

Most cars With airboxes seem to run without the little pipe and warm-up flap box anyway.

I ran foam filters on my 2.7 Carrera and the workshop said it needed no adjustments when they ran it through a lambda sensor thing. I guess it’s down to how perfect your whole set up is as to whether it’s sensitive enough to matter. Mine was 30k miles post-rebuild so was more about what felt best and didn’t melt the pistons that factory settings.

It won’t hurt to just remove the box and go round the block a few times. The intake noise when it comes on cam does it for me more than exhaust noise and you don’t get any drone on constant throttle at any engine speed.

I prefer the Dansk single, simply as in a long run it’s that bit easier on the ears.

But am currently considering putting the double back on, just for some fun Vava Voom


Re Sam’s comments re airboxes, my PO, one Mr Andrew Frankel reckoned it was quieter when Tuthills swapped the airbox for the twin air filters !! So like beauty, Sound is in the ear of the Beholder !!

An SC on carbs is all ‘firing rivets into a dustbin’ type noise, the 2.7 MFI barks and slurps and bong-bubbles its way through the revs.

Hard to describe but very different when experienced.

I did a run in my 2.0 on carbs without the airbox recently and it wasn't a very nice sound at all. I was surprised as I thought it would be better.
