re-attaching the handbrake cable to the handbrake (1969)

So in my quest to get my gears back, I took the handbrake off.

But I can't work out how to get the cable equaliser re-attached. I can't get hands underneath the handbrake to push it in to place to get the pin back in it.

Can the handbrake cables be de-adjusted to give more cable length? Or is there another sneaky trick?

Yes, adjuster at the rear is part of the cable outer assembly, to be found near where the cable goes into the hub. Adjustor nut and lock nut.

Not going well really. The adjusters are well and truly tight and rusted. I'm sure with some penetrant and more dedicated effort I can get them freed off. Would be a good thing anyway. So I tried again to get the handbrake connected up just to see if it's possible. I can't get it to go back together.

So is there anyone who has done this and knows the knack? Because I doubt I'm going to be able to do it unless de-adjusting the handbrake gives lots more slack!

I've just done this on my 78. If it's a similar set up j would say it's almost impossible to get the cables onto the balance bar without, at the very least, loosening the adjuster off at the wheel. I would go as far as to say you need to release them completely. If they are rusted up you are going to need new cables at least.

It's actually getting the balance bar back on to the handbrake and the pin back in. I've just been reading Haynes about taking the cables off and I really don't want to be taking the calipers and disks off to make that happen if I can avoid it. Looking at the picture in the haynes manual has given me an idea about how to try again so I will try that first. Then I'll set about undoing the lock nut for the adjuster and get more cable length then take it apart further as a last resort!

Right after quite a lot of cursing, we are there. It was the picture in the Haynes manual that did it, showing lifting the rear of the handbrake mechanism and not the front as I was doing. Getting it all lined up by feel was very hard and every time I got close the warning light wire pinged off. So I cut the wire and soldered it back together when I had got the whole thing together.

Also took the time to refit the carpets better and it's smarter than ever and all works. Awsome!
