Paint code for silver cookies

Can anyone confirm the paint code for 1973 silver cookies.

I picked up some info posted by Nick Moss over on IB in 2010 which calls the colour 'Steel blue metallic'. Looks to be from a Porsche options picture poss. Wheel option is called M-No 460

but then someone on IB added this code...

'The colour code for the M 460 wheel is 631 and is known as 'graublaudiamant' in German'.

This sounds right but when I look at that code it is for a 1974 body colour that is way more blue than I think the wheels should be?

Problem may be that I think the above wheel info also relates to 1974? Nick had posted it on IB afterall. Is it possible that Porsche offered a more blue coloured cookie in 1974 than in 1973? I see there is a 1973 body colour called 'Silver metallic 925' and it has a different paint code than the 1974 Silver Metallic code 936.

I'd like to get these wheels right.

I've always fancied seeing what my car would look like on Cookie Cutters, just as it left the factory back in 1973.

Justification came from convincing myself that I needed a set of winter wheels and tyres….after mentioning it elsewhere on a here a fellow DDk'er pointed me to set on Ebay at a bargain £199! …even further good fortune when they arrived with a Dec 72 stamp date, exactly the same as my car build…

…as you'd expect they needed refurbing….



….I've never seen a perfect original set in the flesh so colour was a stab in the dark however in all photos they seem to be a fairly dull finish and not too metallic so we opted for a matt finish similar to the centre caps….



….the end result looked pretty good…



…..then mounted with Dunlop Winter Response tyres…

…well I've missed the winter although was itching to see how they looked on the car….







….crazy to think that this is pretty much exactly how the car left the factory over 41 years ago!…..the car's been on quite a journey during that time which has now come full circle

Now all I need is a bit of snow!

Thanks Darren, would be interested to get that code and get some made up.

I agree on the less shiny finish, the unrestored 72 and 73 wheels I have are actually quite rough a surface.

I have a full set of five '73 wheels coming soon which I believe are unrestored also so that will tell me a lot. Didn't get them for £200 though...you do make some great finds mate!

If they have any original paint left on them a decent paint supplier will be able to scan them and match colour.

OK, so thanks to Scott I now have a matched set of '73 Cookie cutters. Four of them have been repainted in what looks like base and lacquer, the other is potentially unrestored.

Not sure I am any the wiser in terms of original finish but if the possibly unrestored one is a guide then the original finish was very thin and pretty matt...





The painted finish is more silver and shinier, although it only looks shiny when viewed at a certain angle...





So, I am leaning towards a base coat and maybe a couple of coats of matt lacquer that does actually give a sort of sheen in my experience of doing undersides and front compartments.

I will see if my local paint shop can get a reading off the unrestored wheel for the base coat, although I do wonder if it will be at all accurate given the 'patina' of this wheel. If that doesn't work then I'm sure my wheel restorer would have some colour cards and we'll just take a punt on something.

If anyone has insights from the above or anything more definitive please let me know asap.

Not sure if this will help or hinder...

I am not a follower of originality to the Nth degree, but do like a close enough look for parts, esp wheels.
I have 7" wide 944 Cookies on my 73 T, and had them simply powder coated in silver locally, but not the harsh bright modern silver (AUDI etc) but 'Old Silver' which looks good to me.
The wheel shop said it was a popular colour for classics esp those with steel wheels, ie Lotus Cortina.
I wanted to paint the centres using a rattle can and took the wheel to the local paint supply shop and they match it with
Pro Range Medium Coarse Silver which was an exact match when painted over a dark grey etch primer.

Is the colour exact to the factory, doubt it, but is was a simple painless way to get the classic finish without the hard gloss of some paints.
