That's a very early '69 model built just after the '68 summer break so that's probably why it still uses the lock-wired version ...

Has anyone any experience on how to put the shift mechanism back together? I'm struggling to work out how to get the springs compressed enough to get them in. They are quite beefy and need a lot of compression.

Well I got over that, I just needed to exert a bit more oomph!

The gearchange mechanism is all back together and I am confident it'll get gears. I didn't take it out to check it as I need to adjust the front wheel bearings. On checking the corners after BH, there is a #lot# of play on both fronts, more so on the front left which does all the work through Paddock Hill.

I'm still not completely convinced about the gearchange though as the gear linkage rod definitely rubs under where the handbrake is on a metal bracket that's there. I'll try it tomorrow and post some pics to show. Progress though!

Right, I have the gear linkage back together and it seems to work very well, much better than before.

Got the lateral adjustment ok, just need to get the fore and aft position right (the lever is a bit far away at the moment). It seems that the gear linkage rod is not rubbing on the metalwork that's underneath it under the handbrake any more which is what has improved the shift so much. But I'm not sure if that will come back when I change the fore and aft position.

That's very good progress. And I adjusted the front wheel bearings a smidge and that is much better too.

However, I can't get the handbrake re-attached, but I'll start a new thread for that.

So as noted on the other thread, the handbrake is back together and on a test drive, the gear change is now fantastic. After 3 years of it not being right, it was the bottom of the gearstick not being engaged properly that was the problem.

So that saga is all done, on with the 2.4S transplant project!
