I added a few images from Homologation Document #3053 to my earlier post of photos taken at Barry's earlier in the week....

....they give a better understanding of what/why the modifications are and explains why Barry took a lump hammer to put a dent in the OSR inner chassis leg!

I bunked off work first thing this morning and set off to see Barry......

......after a lot of time, effort and research we're finally happy that the arches accurately represent the shape and dimensions of the original cars and can be welded into position.....









....the front bumper is still some way off, problem being is that all those available are moulded to work with Turbo flares, and whilst we expected a fair degree of modification we're not sure if we'll rework the current one or replace it with another.......

....ultimately really pleased with how Marek Lappock's excellent flares replicate originals and can't wait to see them welded into place

How do you/Barry set the arch centres to the wheels?......

....having spent the afternoon with Barry on Thursday I now have a bit more of an idea....

....the rear flares are excellent and positioning for these was straightforward, after lining up the torsion hole, where they sit on the on the rear quarters looks correct and a couple of measurements confirm that. Gary has made up my short trailing arms and we still plan to fit these with a wheel before final welding but that's more for a visual and clearance check to be certain. Side on the wheels don't sit in the centre of the arch anyway....

....the front arches were more of a concern as they could be twisted and moved forwards or backwards. It seems all of the front RS bumpers on the market have been developed for turbo flares which are a completely different shape and therefore need a lot of work so no good as a reference point.....with time pressing on I decided to take my Mac loaded with a gazillion RS photos and we spent the afternoon measuring and scaling using know reference points.....we found this wasn't possible from the front as the depth of field, although consistent, varied the reading too much (I expect there's a mathematical formula for correcting this although that's beyond a working class boy with few GCSE's!).....however from the side we were able to establish firm reference points we could measure and check and then it was down to eye.....ultimately a good outcome and if you look at the side photo I posted above you can see initial markings and just how much we corrected our initial positioning...

....perhaps not ideal scaling from photographs although if you study all the original cars closely the differences are quite extreme and in some cases I feel the characteristic shape of the RSR arch has been exaggerated......I had hoped to view and measure an original car I've been fortunate enough to photograph extensively before although there's no guarantee that would have been more helpful and on this occasion the owner couldn't actually find it!

Positions of wheels to the arch is critical or it can look just out of kilter.

Sure they are bang-on now!

Lady Luck smiled on me again today when a super rare item that I feared might take years to find turned up within a month of looking! .....

.....not so difficult as I picked up another two NOS mirrors today! .....





.....the reality is these are extremely rare parts......I queried the part number 911 731 017 05 with my friendly local Porsche Parts Manager and surprisingly he was unable to find any details of the mirror on the UK Porsche parts system although they obviously exist and were fitted to all six of the RHD Carrera 3.0RS's built along with 74-75 Australian and Asian Market 2.7 Carrera's.....

....I'm reliably informed that all rear number plate lamps started as chrome and were then painted black for the RS.....I have a theory that this is also the case for these mirrors fitted on the 3.0RS....



....now I have spares I'll probably fit the used one to my orange car.....not that's it's important on the old Mongrel however the reproduced RHD flag mirror it currently has never existed in period and is a clear visual incorrect anomaly......

.....although the flag mirror does looks nicer!
