That foam is not factory. The deadening pad/sheet is thinner and far more dense, a lot like the pads on the inside of the floor.

The adhesive must be very high temperature too, that roof will get very hot esp with the dark green colour soaking up the rays.

I still think you should leave that dash pad alone, just a good clean after fitting, let it wear it's history?

You are probably right on the dash pad, if I wrap im sure people in years to come will be cursing me for it and im in the bad books already!

While on on this subject of materials, does anyone know what this stuff is, came with the car, its like sponge and its so old it just fell apart in my hands, had to bin it, couldnt really even unfold it.

Agreed the foam is not factory, but not far off. My ‘72 had this (original) foam and then three rubbery strips stuck to the skin underneath. You can see these in the bottom photo where someone conveniently removed the floor for a better picture!

on the topic of sound deadening, my car has literally none in the shell, is it worth getting some? Or does it not really make much difference? I was looking at getting these 3M pads which seem much discussed as deadening and maybe put something absorbant on top of that? But what? Has anyone any experience in this area? I have no idea on this front, didnt bother with my '02.

It depends whether you want to fit the radio and speaker, and listen to it, or just listen to the music coming from the rear more clearly!

From the memory left on the dash panel, 14 is the HRW switch - photo from my LHD 1972 car, but the same switch in 69, I think.

Finally back to hazard switches I can only find 3 possibilities of knobs, one of these must be right for a Euro 69

1) The one above

2) This one (which I think looks the nicest) I think this knob may have ended in 68 in the USA but lasted through 69 in europe? this pictire is from Rose Passion for a 69 hazard light light switch, you can tell from the number of spade terminals though that it is not the actual thing just a (representative?) stock image. https://www.rosepassion.com/en/diagrams ... tch-173701

69 is approx 240mm long and 115mm wide

70-73 is approx 255mm long and 115mm wide

Here's what's in my UK RHD 69 S
(Please don't treat this as a reference pic - it's an ex race car with other detail changes eg steering wheel, tacho, massive roll cage!).
The switch is original, but missing the repeater bulb etc (does not flash).



More usefully, here's possibly the most original RHD 69 S in the world. Now resident in Australia, but I think it was a UK car originally.

Not so useful for switches, but more generally: for reference pics you can't beat an original photo from back in the day when the cars were new.

Having been helpful, I am now going to constructively criticise.... ignore if you wish, of course.
Some of the questions you are asking would be answered by looking at the other restoration threads on DDK. If you haven't looked at them in detail, it's well worth an evening or 3, in my opinion.

Seems things did vary in the factory over the years, Gary's '72T roof lining is different to my 73T, I only had the 3 strips, no foam.

As to general sound deadening.
For 28 years I drove mine without deadening, a radio would have been a waste, impossible to chat to the wife about 50 mph.
Loaded the inside with 3M deadening sheet 3 years ago and the thing is still radio free due to back ground noise, but chatting now ok to 70 mph.

Made the car far more road useable, but the stuff is heavy.

Have to agree with reading the restoration threads from the past. Maybe none will be exact reference stories, but will contain lots of facts about putting these car together as well as the exact right colour to repaint KONI Orange and stickers if you need that, but also great general info which can be relied on.

I am no stickler to originality, I painted my Bilstein struts and dampers a FIAT green rattle can from Halfords, close enough and use black Hammerite Smooth a lot, their smooth satin black is great for general suspension re-finishing, but soring wires and many other areas those threads are great.

You are lucky doing this car now, 30 years back the internet had not been invented and details on the cars were scarce.

My 69 car has no deadening at all. Including no stone chip on the underside of the floor, wheel arches, etc.
It's loud. Excellent fun if you are in the mood... for unavoidable motorways on the way to somewhere more interesting, I use noise cancelling headphones. How's that for a lightweight solution? They work brilliantly well.

With that said, if your car is intended to be somewhat multi purpose (and that is a 911 strength, of course), I would put in approx the same level of deadening the factory used. It will still be loud enough to know you have an engine, but takes the edge off a bit.

Having lived with my 911 for a few years now without sound deadening and only lightest of lightweight carpeting I would recommend sound deadening. The car was built as a fast road/track car but reality is more of the former than the latter and I am contemplating adding some sound deadening to the car.

First pic is my modified speaker. Cone was toast so I used the frame to mount a new 3 way.
The profile of the repair to the left of instruments wasn't perfect, but it shows what can be done.
