Good luck and I admire your perseverance, especially on something like oil leaks!
The force is strong in this one ......

JB weld = chemical metal. As long as the surface is super clean that should work.

Have you checked the O-rings behind the washers on those two case studs? Assuming the Mag cases are similar to the later Aluminium ones then the shaft the studs pass through acts as an oil gallery and as such is under full oil pressure when the engine is running.

Don’t quote me as we rarely see early cars in here (my experience lies with 3.0SC and onwards) but I would expect to see this type of nut and washer there.

Jon

Thanks so much!

Yes, I have reached the same conclusion, following your super helpful prompt and a bit of research. You know this, but for the benefit of others: the washers are thick and have a chamfer on the inside edge to retain the o ring. Same as all the other stud nuts.
I think we might have found the problem...

Correct parts now ordered from my OPC.

Thanks again, great stuff from DDK as usual.

Cheers, Richard.

Boom! Oil leak is gone.

Turns out if you buy the correct parts, and torque them up correctly, they work fine. Who would have thought? I would usually resent paying 30 quid to the OPC for some "special" nuts and washers, but in this case it's a bargain.

Thanks again for the help, especially Jon and Gary, much appreciated.

Cheers, Richard.

Richard,
Excellent news. You must be relieved the oil leak was not something more fundamental.

Kirk
Yes, it is a relief. But mildly annoying - another thing done incorrectly by professionals, corrected by amateurs, or by other professionals at my cost (like my completely wrong clutch plate, or indeed the oil bypass mod on my 69 engine which ended in a complete re-rebuild...).
Note : no such errors on the metalwork or paint, as far as I can see.

Richard,
I was unaware of the oil bypass issue on the 1969 engine.

Yes these sort of things are annoying and results often in extra costs. I can't say I have been happy when I have experienced "issues" but to an extent I have become inured to these events to a certain extent. It is quite difficult to find "professionals" who are reliable in the first instance and probably just as difficult to find someone who consistently gets things right. I have experienced "professional" failure on work on older Porsches. I suspect it is, unfortunately, shared by some other members of this forum. From these experiences you find out who are generally "the good guys" and who are not. Regrettably, it is often an expensive and inconvenient way of finding out who can be trusted. That said you do have a solution to your oil leak and a relatively straight forward one. Getting the engine in and out to solve the problem is a bit of a pain. I have my own story on that too. Let's hope there are no further issues.
Regards.

Indeed, not really a big deal, just inconvenient.

Good practice though. Barry and I are waiting for our call-up for Classic Le Mans. Surely one of the Porsche teams needs two old blokes who can probably get an engine in and out in less than a day (as long as we don't get sidetracked onto talking about Audi A2s, and assuming a plentiful supply of coffee).

Small update:

The car is still not UK registered. I've been pestering DVLA with limited success, but things do seem to have moved forward a little bit this week. Fingers crossed.

In the meantime I have been diligently working through Check, Measure, Adjust to achieve some kind of baseline engine tune. For a while it was running pretty rough and seemingly very rich, but as CMA points out - not a good idea to reach straight for the two mixture adjustments on the pump; chances are it's something else... In my case something else meant the failure of three new (Beru) HT leads (not all at the same time, for amusement). Must have been a crappy batch. And my personal favourite - MFI pump timing out by 180 degrees. Correct timing mark, wrong cycle... 50/50 chance, unlucky!

From which I can conclude that it will run on 4 cylinders, and it will run with the fuel injection timing completely wrong. But it won't run very well.
All sorted now, I think.

I have also now switched over to Jonny's CDI+ unit. Since I had a known good standard CDI lying around, I started with that, to eliminate one variable. Not to say CDI+ is suspect, but from experience I do know it to be more sensitive than the standard unit to poor setup of points, and to electrical interference from issues in the HT system. The analogue original unit tends to mask such things. Anyway no drama in the switchover, so I can now fiddle with the timing from my laptop in due course.

So with everything basically working, lovely weather, but no UK registration, what else could I do...?
I insured it on the chassis number and went for a little early evening drive:

(Please excuse ride height, unfinished cosmetics and temporary exhaust)

Actually this seems a good time for a "before" photo, too...
