Ok so im thinking I will leave the under bonnet area as is. Which means Im ready for putting stuff back together under here. What is the generally accepeted order of attack? I assume its

1) clocks & dash switches, stalks etc etc
2) wipers?
3) heater/blower
4) washer/brake reservoir/other bits and pieces...

I think the dash is going to be a nightmare to figure out, it seems to consist of a million fiddly little parts, many of which I might be missing, e.g. I have the totally bare switches but god knows where the knobs are and the bezels and rubbers etc to actually fit them, I think much of these kinds of things are missing.

On this note I have looked at my clocks, below is what I have, they look rather a loose fit in the dash openings if I just put them in as is because the bezel doesnt have much of a ridge... Is there a secondary bezel or something im missing?




I think this is the point I need to start to consult proper diagrams... what is the best online place for finding these parts diagrams you have all been posting?

I also got around to photographing my bin of unknown parts, if anyone can tell me what any if these parts are that would be most helpful! (theres a lot)

Your instruments should have a rubber ring around them. I’ll try and look at some of the other bits later.

Just a suggestion but, for me, there are far too many pictures of unidentified parts in your post to keep scrolling up & down to look at.

I think you'll have more luck if you pick ~ 12 items at a time to ask for help in identifying ...

Looks like you have got a fun project on your hands there.

It is a good idea to photograph items so that you can keep going round the loop of checking what you have left and what it might be used for.
I did the same with my 912 rebuild and over time you start to identify parts and also realise that you've been given a lot of junk that doesn't belong to the car.

I would suggest you mark up boxes with descriptions of car sections ( that tie up with the PET categories ) so you can start to store them all in a logical manner, engine parts etc.

If it helps item 65 looks like a thermostat from a 912 or 356. Did the car start out as a 912? Either way I'm not aware they were fitted to early 911s.
However the thermostats can be quite valuable if they work.

19 looks more like the vinyl for part 11.

If it helps item 65 looks like a thermostat from a 912 or 356. Did the car start out as a 912? Either way I'm not aware they were fitted to early 911s.
However the thermostats can be quite valuable if they work.

Paul Martin had a Beetle with a Porsche engine, so there may well be bits from that project kicking around the boxes.

Thanks for all your efforts guys, I know its not easy to guess from the pictures, plus like has been said some/many parts could be from anything not even porsche related.

Put my looms back in today, all went well until the fuse boxes, both have seized screws (I had to cut the tips of the wires off to remove the boxes). It seems this must be a common issue because there is evidence of drilled out screws on other fuses too? (why arent these spade terminal boxes! the electrics on these cars was impressing me vs my 02 but the fuse boxes with its fiddly screw in wires are terrible - everything has its ups and downs i guess). I fixed fuse box 2 but fuse box 1 was having none off it I ended up shattering the frame of the box trying to extract siezed in studs... how does steel sieze into brass so bad? So now I need a replacement fuse box 1.



As you can see I cant fit my Fuse box 1 now.

I do have a few questions in this area though. What is the orange relay for? Horn? In any case it has a green and black wire coming from it that was not plugged to anything when I stripped the wiring out, any ideas what this wire is for? My 69S wiring diagram shows no black/green wires that this could be.

Also there is a double white/green wire that was connected to nothing as well, im guessing this is fog lights (if fitted) again my wiring diagram suggests this wire should not exist...


I also noticed these, wat are these studs and holes for? just to the upper left of the fuse boxes




After this I started rooting around to see what I have and what I need from other under bonnet systems

Wipers, mostly there but some issues. The thread on the end of the motor shaft is sheared. I only have about 1/2 a nuts depth of thread (3mm) to hold the arm onto the motor... im not sure if anything can be done about this. It looks like it might hold and be ok but its not ideal, shame to chuck a whole motor for this, id have to but a replacement motor just to get another shaft though...

The spindle arms are just loose in the frame tubes. I assume there should be some kind of bushes/bearings etc to hold the spindles in place. I have none of parts 12-19 (that I can find) which I assume achieve this... a photo of this setup would be great if anyone has one.

Should there be a cover on the motor for all of the spade terminals, they look rather exposed as is.





So with that I moved onto the heater blower. This is what I have, as well as the flappy things that the A-post tubes feed, one of which is broken (see earlier posts). I seem to have the basic frame and flaps etc but no blower motor itself. I assume there is a round gasket that seals these two halves when you put them together? again pictures would be great!


Is it possible to replace the foam on these flaps?


Finally I looked at the washer bottle. If you just place it in situ the neck rattles in the frame it pokes through. The parts diagram shows that there should be a gasket im missing? does this hold the bottle in place and prevent the rattling? Any pictures would be great!


Im going to have to start buying some parts to make progress in here, where is the best place to order gaskets and clips and small fiddly things from?

I think a lot of us have diy'd these parts, foam for the butterflies: computer mouse mats are made of good durable closed foam plastic, easy to cut etc.

As to parts, the usual sources are type911 and design911 With both you need to look carefully at the years and the parts to be sure they are right, but good companies imho, used them for years.
Always remember OPC dealers too!

As recently found by another DDK'r, there could be a fabric strap from the wiper motor assembly to the underside of the dash (there certainly is on a '73 car) and this must be installedbefore the dash top goes on.

With many of your questions, you may need to go image hunting on Google, you will spot so many things and build up a car detail map in your mind!

Your pull switch with wires attached looks like a rear wiper switch. On mine (70MY) it is fitted under the dash binnacle below clocks.
Pretty sure the double green/white wires are fog light as you suggest.

That pull switch looks like the type used for (optional) fog lights.

Regarding the washer bottle - yes, there should be a rubber grommet that fits between the neck & the hole on the latch panel:
