What did you do in/on/for your Porsche today?

Oh so gently try to tighten them first to crack the corrosion, but really, you need an impact wrench from Machine Mart to 'rattle' them free.
We have been there before you!

Carried on polishing! Got the outside clay barred and waxed. Took a lot of washing to get it clean enough! I think I'm doing it in the wrong order though. Wheels off next to clean the wheel arches and the back of the wheels properly. Then a quick go on the inside!

Just looked up Rost Off as I never heard of it before. If I use that it, do you think it might also freeze the engine cross member and make it susceptible to cracking ?

There are several versions on the "blue" does the freezing thingy. Plus is the regular rust penetrant.

Does your engine bar use long bolts with nuts at the bottom of the bar
or is it the threaded type? If it has nuts it is very important to hold them
with as long a 19mm spanner as you can get in the limited space between
the bottom of the mounting bar and the engine tinwork. Otherwise as said
by others it's very easy to put a big twist in the end of the mounting bar
which will crack either the weld joint or the bar.

Mine were well frozen when I got to them in '89, but the one bolt partly stripped. Ran a tap to clean things up and fresh bolts (from Bert Gear!).
The bolts are a fine metric iirc and give me the sweats when ever I torque them back in tight.
Cant imagine you can heli-insert those mounting s on the torque tube, so be careful Graham.

Finished replacing the cv joints and changed the gearbox oil. Can I just say that I hate cv grease and hex head bolts on drive shafts.

Suggestion to all. If you need to replace your cv joints, pay someone else to do it!

Off out to see if I have fixed the knock on acceleration and deceleration in a mo. After a Shower and change of clothes.

Did I mention that I hate cv joint grease?

Did my Driveshafts, Bolts and Grease 2 weeks back. I did have use of a two post ramp that made life easier, but still a well messy job!

Oops, well a totally rust-free 914 probably doesn't exist, so I mustn't complain. New rear floor section on passenger side and bottom half inch of outer bulkhead required. Rest seems sound. Well, except for under the pedals.

Water had been getting into the car two ways: first was a broken drain hose from the cold-air box under the scuttle, which dumped its contents in the void under the petrol tank, where it then tracked into the cockpit and pooled under the pedals. More water got into the car via a dodgy door seal, which allowed water to pool on top of the sill next to the passenger seat. It tended to go unnoticed because it was on the opposite side to the driver and was only noticeable if you put your hand on the carpeted sill when getting out of the car. That water tracked back to the floor and then attacked the lower bulkhead panel. No signs of leakage from that popular 914 weakness the rear window seal, fortunately.



Broken drain from air-box – fortunately enough of a stub left to re-secure the hose. Until now, every time it rained, water was dumped inside the car, rather than out through the bottom...


This meant water gathered by the pedals...

Considering my 914 originated in Chicago, and spent much of its life in Wisconsin before heading to the Atlantic seaboard in South Carolina, it's pretty darn good. Thank goodness.
