Refinishing Engine Lid Lettering

The PORSCHE Letters and 911 badge on my Targa engine lid were a silver grey, because the original finish had worn and faded over time. About 10 years ago I sprayed them black. Some of the paint has chipped off so I have now removed the black paint.

Do I leave them silver grey or do I respray them matt black, and if so what paint is recommended for a long “chip free” life?

However I assume they were originally black anodised, if so, can anyone recommend/have experience of a company to refinish them? My preference would be to restore them (if possible) to the original finish.

I think it is down as much to the primer used to etch to the anodising.

I've used UPOL etch primer and a good acrylic satin black on top.

Stripping the anodising off and re-doing it may threaten the location pins if corroded on the back John.
I think Nick Moss has a tame anodiser for his wheel/ door frame refurbs, so might be worth asking him?

If you are going to repaint, Dupli-Color Metalcast seems to be a popular choice the US. More of a gunmetal finish than black. They do a base coat and top coat.

Badger Anodising did some black anodising for me a few years ago. They will polish the parts prior to anodising. Badger are in Birmingham. You would need to talk to them about the exact finish you require.

I have just had a chat with a guy from Badger Anodising (thanks for the lead Kirk). He seems to have a very good idea of what I need, so I am taking the bits down in the next few days for him to have a look at. I am pretty confident from my conversation that I will get the results/finish that I am looking for.

My painter lost my old badge, which sounds very like yours in condition. I liked the aged look and have been trying to find an unrestored one. So if your interested I would buy you a lovely new correctly finished one in exchange for your old one.

Sorry to hear about your lost badge, what are you missing, the PORSCHE set or the 911 Badge, or all?

TBH I am happy to retain my own badges if practical. If this works out OK all the badges will have the same finish / toning. I took on board Grahams warning about the potential for the pins to erode and I have discussed this with the chap at Badger. He did not foresee a problem. He commented, when I owned up to them being Porsche badges, that Porsche quality meant he could be confident all would be OK.

I used Wurth Satin Schwarz , in error mind as it came out a shade of Anadiosed black grey , perfect

Dropped the badges off at the anodisers Friday afternoon , should be ready late Monday / Tuesday. Nice people and all good so far, looking forward to seeing the results.

+1 for Badger Anodising. Used them for porsche lettering, rechroming and some powder coating. Top bloke!
