Odd electrical/starting issue - Fixed

Over the winter and during lockdown I have been occasionally running the 911. It's been starting first time over the period until last weekend, when the battery died (or that is what I assumed) when I try to start it to put it back in the garage. So I put it on the trickle charge and left it until today.

Turned the key and heard the fuel pump and saw the red charge light and then went to start it and they was a loud click from the rear of the car and all of the electrics went dead (just like last weekend). The funny thing is, if you leave the car for a few minutes the electrics come back!!!

I'm hopeless at electrics so any advice would be welcomed

How old is the battery Brendan? It may have failed so once you demand big current when the solenoid kicks in it can’t deliver anything.

I assume you’ve checked the obvious cleanliness of the battery terminals and gearbox earth strap?

It's not an old battery and I've not check those connections yet but the earth strap is the first on my list. It's just strange that after a few minutes the power returns.

Hi Brendan, it certainly sounds like a loose or dirty connection somewhere. The earth strap would be the first call, after that the battery earth from the -ve terminal. Also, disconnect the battery and check the connection of the heavy battery lead to the starter motor. It may have come loose or corroded.
Sorry we won't be making our trips to Doune this year!

Car is starting and running again

Clean on the battery terminals and also the main engine earth strap. Even gave the starter a thump for good luck
