911 SWB - Resto - what do I need to do with this middle bit

Hi all

I'm about to repair this section and am not sure what to do with this middle section (which is currently spot welded to the inner rail near to the front of the white tape)

Do I need to put a flange on it so it gets spot welded to the floor pan, or, is it something to do with the jacking point?

Also can someone tell me where this panel goes? Is it something to do with this area? Do I need it?

Sorry this may not be helpful but I'm deeply frightened by that photo. I'm 100% behind the DIY rebuild but you've lost all the reference points with that much cut out and it needs to be on a jig.

There are multiple layers in that area. Take a look in this forum for some of the major body restoration threads such as this one: It's full of great reference photos.

I've done loads on my own bodyshell and I've stopped in the same area you are in now and I'm getting it done professionally on a Celette as it's too complex and geometry critical for a freehand approach.

That vertical panel comes down to the seam, BUT, I'm with Gary.
With the torque tube out like that you need to get it back in using a correct jig or the car will crab at least, or if badly installed the suspension AND the engine will not fit or at best bind like mad.

I had to do DIY surgery on both side but there was more than enough metal to hold the tube correctly while I came up to it with fresh metal.
That was 32 years ago and the car drives perfectly.

If you have the jog, then time to get the car on it and build the panels to it and shell. Very sensitive area of a 911.

I can see from the picture why you thought I had hacked the torsion tube in half but its actually the heater pipe (which is normally hidden by the inner sill) and the back bottom kick plate of rear seat.

I can add further pics but im pretty sure the middle bit has a flange which spot welds to the floor pan.

I couldn't find the exact bit in the resto threads

Anymore thoughts?

I think I cab see the middle piece with the flange on it, and the flange points to the outer sill.?

The area in question is where the floor pan is cut out

Around that corner you’ve got 3 Layers of steel that join onto each other - and my car is an 87 so don’t know how different that is to a SWB car

on my '73 there are 3 layers that are all spot welded through all along the floor and torsion bar lip under the torsion/suspension cross tube.
It is a busy layering of sheet metal and I think the only part of the shell to be so. SWB cars could be very different.

Have you been through the resto thread titled “‘66 LHD Doctors Car” (or similar). Do a search for “doctor”, if not. You should find some useful reference material.
