Re: Flares....
Always good to see Barry at work on anything!
This car, no exception.
I don't think I've seen an early 911 rust so badly, if at all, at the rear turret corners, or have I been asleep for decades?
Agree with Gary on those skin stiffeners though, why did the factory think they add a worthwhile strengthening?
Anyway, wonderful restoration and will look great in blue.

Re: Flares....
Really surprising Graham considering how solid the rest of the car is.....just goes to show what can be lurking under that stone chip!
Barry did actually make a similar comment to Gary regarding the cross member strengthening but that's how they were!
.....
.....although left a little traumatized after those turrets!

I assumed you'd made the turret holes yourself.

I am sure you have covered off the paint part of your project, i have just gone throught the whole process of contacting a bunch of companies, ones previously used as well as new. Happy to share if you need it.Darren65 wrote:.....that's a long story!MarkIII wrote:.......Whats the plan for paint, you cant be to far away now!![]()

Re: Flares....
I've been incredibly lucky with this build regarding the acquiring of original parts, all at reasonable cost......fat grip steering wheel, 110L fuel tank, prototype Whale Tail etc.....and I've not really been looking!
And recently by chance these beauties passed my way....

.....genuine 1974 Lollipops first fitted to a RS lightweight back in 74, removed in circa 2005 when the car was sold and returned to original specification at which point they were purchased by a friend who used them for competition in his ST for a few years before being put into storage waiting for me!
......
....I've not decided if I'll fit both or just the driver with an RS passenger.....
.....regarding seat rails would anyone have photos of original fixings and do you think these rails are original?

Cheers,

Re: Flares....
I've had a few originals - but not for many years - &, from memory, there were several variations:Darren65 wrote:

- early type which had a flat bottom (which yours appear to be) &
- later type which had 4 built-in raised 'feet' on the bottom (usually seen in 935's)
- there were also at least 2 different original sources - either those supplied through the Race Dept (made by Recaro ?) & those supplied via Vasek Polak
I've not seen that exact method of mounting before - but have seen them either fixed - ie mounted directly to the floor - or utilising std mid-'70's Recaro sliders ...
For further info I'd contact (in no particular order):
Neil Bainbridge
Oliver Hussenot (OliveR)
David Glenn ('hesaputz')
Alex Assink ('911_2.2T')
Gerrit Blankman (NML Depot in Germany)
George Krompecher (GeorgeK)
.

Re: Flares....
....and with the pan back in the roll bar could be fitted......previously I'd obtained one of these through Barrie Martin although I don't think he's producing these anymore, fortunately my good friend Marek Lappock also makes a perfect recreation in the correct 40mm tubing.....
....I think this one may have been intended for a narrow body car
.....

....brackets welded in place....

....and with a little tweaking it was a perfect fit....

Re: Flares....
....then Barry worked his way around the car finishing off various items before the car goes on the rotisserie.....
.....a glaringly obvious post 1974 hole under the hood was corrected....

....whilst on the other side we did something different to the holes used for the fuel tank....most 3.0RS's would have started life with a regular fuel tank and wing flap filling although we're going with a 110L plastic tank and underhood filling making these holes redundant, on the Mongrel we simply cut a couple of plates and used a threaded bar through the middle to secure them although this time around we decided to tack a couple of plates in place which I think looks pretty cool....
