Best tyres for 1989 3.2 Carrerra

Post by ianmorrow »

I have a 1989 3.2 Carrera with Falcon tyres on part worn. I like to have things correct so what tyres are best given that I understand the final run out year cars had a wider back wheel?
All advice very welcome

Even though the ‘89 cars had an 8” wide rear wheel they used the same size tyres as the earlier cars with a 7” rim.

Front 205/55/16
Rear 225/50/16

For a road car we tend to fit N rated continentals.

Cheers
Jon

Thank you very much for that.
My Fuchs are immaculate having been refurbished. Do I need to worry about damage during fitting? Also the wheel nuts are painted black magnesium. I don’t really want them marked with an air gun. Even manual release and retightening is likely to take the paint off. I am probably being too fussy.....but?...

If you buy a soft socket from Type911 and take it with you, I’m sure the tyre place won’t mind using it without using an air gun.

I normally remove my rims and drop them off at the tyre place.

I've been using Toyo Proxies for years on my 3.2. I run 205x50x16 and 245x45x16 but have a slightly difference setup to standard.

Thanks guys.
I was at the London Classic Car Show last weekend and on the Paul Stephens stand. Lovely cars but all had scuffed wheel nuts maybe that’s life ... or is it ?

Thanks everyone. Have discovered that there is not a huge range of choice for 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 if one wants a matching set which I do. Neither do I want to spend £1034 on a set of Pirellis so I have ordered a set of Bridgestone SO 2s from Camskill at £348 inc delivery. Thanks again all!

Hi Ian, do you think the shortage of tyres is as a result of the lockdown, or are Bridgestone just not producing them at present. It’s been mentioned in the past that they just produce them in batches every so often.

Hi Bob
The reaction seems to be that the tyres are not available generally not because of the current crisis. I wanted N rated and a full matching set preferably Continental Bridgestone or Michelin, not very easy!
