Wood is quite alien to me, "if I can't weld it, I'm not particularly interested" comes to mind.
Rock hard English oak and awaited a large piece of chestnut with some really figuring for the top.
Trying to do a simple take on Arts and Crafts design...

That oak is hard to cut accurately.

I just wanted a change from the flippin French motorcycle engine and a few days without petrol fumes!
Woodworking is very new to me and much harder than I expected.
Even had to buy a saw and a work-mate bench/clamp table.

Going to make a garden bench after from reclaimed scaffolding planks once they have dried out, bit more rustic than this table/shelf with legs thing.

Hope to get some points so I can buy a Russian Vostoc watch soon.

All in all rather different to the 996 subject!

I did a fair bit of woodwork before I did metal. Nothing like mikes level, obvs.

I would recommend getting a router and learning how to use it. I made our kitchen table 25 years ago using basically just a router. They are incredibly versatile.

I progressed on to making 8x 8foot tall patio doors that fold back. But for that I splashed out and bought a cast iron combination woodworking machine ( circular saw, spindle moulded and planer thicknesser). It was a lovely piece of kit and I sold it for what I bought it for.

But you can do a hell of a lot with just a router and carefully thought out jigs

At school we were the 'experimental' year, and we had to choose wood or metalwork for the whole 5 years where normally you did a bit of each and then did O levels (as they were called).

I did metalwork and got a merit and grade 1, became an engineer, wanted to be a jeweller then, left school at 16 and did a full 5 year apprenticeship in very heavy rolling mills and such like.
Still have my DIY bearing scraper and all the tools I made as an apprentice. Happy days.

However, was always envious of the O level project the wood boys did which was an acoustic guitar.
If I did wood seriously that would be my direction, guitars.

No room in the garage for such distractions, enough probs in there already.

Feel I need some changes in my hobbies and pursuits, hence the notion of the 996.
The hill climb season is well over and the stillness of winter looms, always thoughts of change.

Wood working is very messy too, the dust goes everywhere and migrates with magical ease into the house...

Wife frowns on why do you need it when you have 3 watches already, and only wear one rarely!
It is a good point, being an engineer I was bought up never to wear a watch by machines etc, so rarelt do waer a watch.

I just like clunky Russion watches.
Had a Sekonda when very young at Secondary School, kept time like an atomic device and you could knock nails in with it.

At the price, sub £100 they are great imho. The article in this month's Octane mag is good to read.

I’ve owned and restored most of the big name watches, I was ill and couldn’t work properly for ten years, so learned to restore watches and clocks and earned a meagre living and rather less than my lawyer wife until the NHS sorted me. This left me with an ex military, early fifties Lemania Chronometer that I’ll keep but never wear.

I don’t wear a watch either but an eccentric friend keeps pushing me to buy an Apple Watch and I am very tempted. He’s a bit of a drinker and finds the alarm function useful in that if you fall over and don’t move for twenty seconds, it vibrates against your wrist. If this doesn’t produce a result after another twenty seconds, it phones the emergency services wherever you are in the world and gives your location. All joking aside, this is a very useful feature and one of many the Watch performs. I’m tempted, especially as I can have a Mickey Mouse dial like I had on an Ingersoll as a kid.

I've never made a table, but ate tonight's dinner off a mahogany table
purchased over 20 years ago.
To get back on track re 996.
My dinner was as follows.
Lamb hotpot with extra thickly cut carrots and Basmati rice with salt and black pepper.
Before you say ' that's carbohydrate overload', the rice absorbs the succulent
lamb gravy and compliments the roast potatoes perfectly. This was followed by strawberry
trifle and cream with a glass of French red and then coffee with plain Belgian chocolate truffles.
The Meals on Wheels lady estimated circa 996 calories and blah blah blah blah ---
