911T - Bosch distributor vacuum connection

Post by 914Chap »

Hi,

I am just reassembling my 2.4T engine which has a Bosch distributor with vacuum advance connection. I have a set of replacement Webber carbs which I have fitted and I have just noticed that there does not appear to be a vacuum connection on the carbs or manifold. It is so long since this engine was all together that I had completely overlooked this when fitting the new carbs. Can anyone tell me if the vacuum connection is absolutely necessary as on some models I understand this was not fitted, hence there being no connection on the carbs I have now fitted. If it is required, does anyone have any experience of how this is best done?

Also, as the carbs are not those originally fitted to this engine, can anyone tell me what jets etc. will be needed for this engine?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks Jonathan.

Hi Jonathan, I had Zenith carbs on my 2.4T and the distributor with vacuum advance. Like you I changed for Webers. I sent my dist to Neil Bainbridge who reburbished it and removed the vacuum advance. It runs fine without it.

Vacuum is generally for emissions/economy which is laughable on our cars. Generally it either adds or removes 5 degrees either at idle or cruise. Simplest thing to do is remove it and time the engine to suit.

Hi, thanks for the input and advice. Can I simply leave the vacuum advance on the distributor unconnected or does it need to be removed for any reason? I presume if there is no connection it will simply have no effect and have no effect on the remaining advance mechanism which is related to engine speed?

Thanks again, Jonathan.
