Relative values... two 911s

Post by gridgway »

So here we have in the classifieds...

A SWB race car in what looks like great condition with FIA papers for £155k - although is that really FIA papers? I thought the HTP was much inferior, not appendix K.
A 1976 'RS' at £171k with no info on condition.

I would have thought the SWB car would be rarer, more desirable and more expensive. But I'm not sure.

So, a stripped-out race car of the First Years v an easy to restore in comparison mid 70's RS?

The RS would have a much larger market appeal esp if LHD I suspect.
Maybe very early cars have to be perfect for top dollar more so than the RS?

There's no such thing as a 1976 'Carrera RS'. It appears to have US-spec rear bumper guards, so is it definitely an MFI car? Mileage given in Kms, so a little confused.

Actually that's not quite the case ...

The 123 Euro Carrera 2.7 cars built for the 1976 model year were homologated as RS models - in order to allow MFI engines to continue being used in Group 4 racing.

To differentiate these models from the 1976 Carrera 3.0's, Porsche gave them VIN's with a '9' as the 7th digit - ie 9116609XXXX. The '9' signifies a racing model - harking back to the 1974 3.0 RSR models.

Regarding the 67S - FIA HTP in my opinion is one and the same thing and what I have on my 65 race car. Appendix K is simply a way of classifying cars of similar year ans performance. 65 911's are period F and GTS11, to comply they have to run solex carbs and single plug engines plus other regualtions. Ths 67S in the listing could have been classified as period G1 (which would be standard for a 67S) but the twin plug engine I suspect takes it out of the up to 69 and pushes it into up to 71 - G2. The car could be backdated to pre-69 status which would make it more competitive, however it seems its current specification is perfect "for what it is"...

The 76 car is listed on car and classic and does appear as described, IMO just the last run out of MFI enigned cars. I'm no expert on these and others would be better informed.

The RS reads well, the engine looks very fresh and right to my limited-knowledge eye.
Rare car with an interesting 'last of the line' story.
Sounds good to me if it is your bag, nothing to do except enjoy it?

The US car has been for sale for over a year and is a colour change car. These few 76 ‘RS’s’ were only supplied new in Germany to selected Porsche customers. The price of this car has dropped a little since the first advert but there will be some transport and tax costs to add which the swb car should not have (before the 31st October anyway). I was told my infinitely rarer Rhd 67S was priced too high at £145k but it would seem good value against this example (same colour too).

Mike

I stand corrected on the 1976 RS bit! :)

Such a shame the post on DDK didn't include a link to the advert.

Mike – does RHD make a car more valuable? It's a subject that's always intrigued me. I know there tend to be fewer of them, but then I'd imagine they appeal to a smaller audience. I am genuinely intrigued and not being a PITA.

I can see Mauro's road-legal race car appealing to the kind of wealthy enthusiast who wants a ready to go toy to run at select events. From other photos I've seen, it is a rather lovely thing.

Thanks all for the clarifications on 'HTP' for the SWB car and 'RS' for the, er, RS!
I'd love to go racing in a 2.0 swb 911, no idea why, just takes my fancy. I presume that car isn't eligible for the 2.0L cup - being twin sparked? Now of course that's all pie in the sky. I've not got the budget to buy it, let alone race it!

Mind you I quite like the idea of the 76 'RS' as well. Previous comment applies though.

Correct the SWB isn't eligible for the 2.0L cup but possibly could be made so.....

Hi Keith

1800 or so Lhd 67S’s built
36 Rhd 67’s built (23 still accounted for)

If rarity made it more valuable then the answer is yes.
If market audience is the greatest factor then no.
Combine the two and who knows?

The market for swb Rhd cars is expanded by overseas interest downunder of course.

Plus, the oldest built Porsche S in Rhd still roaming the planet must count for something too.

Let’s see what happens.

Regards
Mike
