Voltage regulator identity

Post by MikeB »

Guys

Have noticed that recently the ignition light is a bit slower to go out on start up than it used to be. It used to go out once over 1000rpm but now it needs an initial rev to 2k for it to go out, but it does stay out when it drops back to idle.

So I was wondering if the Voltage Regulator needs replacing. So the car is a backdated SC (81 MY), but looking at the pics on line at Type 911 I think it has a 1975 alternator ( red back, two bolt on terminals and one push on ?)

The existing regulator on the engine side panel looks to be in two parts connected by a 3 pin cable

But when I go on-line all I can see is a single box that looks like this

Does this simply replace my two boxes or just the top box and connect it via the 3pin to the smaller box?

Any help appreciated, sparks are not my strong suit ;)

I’m not good on sparks either Mike but would probably check charging voltage first to see if the alternator is doing what it should

Ian

Yes it is churning out 14 volts when running, so I think the alternator is fine

Hi Mike,

At the risk of teaching Grandmother to suck eggs etc, check and clean all of the connections first before you go buying anything.
