71 T rear wheel bearing

quick question, my manual tells me there is a chance the motor needs to come out to replace the bearing, has anyone changed one recently, sounds excessive ??

You need a special puller etc to do it in situ..easy with it impossible without!

Hi Johnny,

This was the one thing I gave to a garage to do

The special 'in-situ' puller is the only practical way. You could do it on a conventional press once the trailing arm is off but you can't get the bolt that secures the trailing arm out without dropping the gearbox out of the way. PLus you have to split the brake lines, handbrake cable etc.

It cost me £200 (for the pair) including the parts at a specialist in Coventry, so really not worth struggling to do it without the puller.

You'll find your car drives much nicer afterwards when the wheels aren't flapping about!

If it is done in-situ you will save needing to have the rear alignment done as well.

I tried to do this in situ on my E I had and it was almost impossible to do. But yes when I rebuilt it all I am sure it needed to be re-alined as it sat alittle one sided..so needed to be checked. Was easy to do once out on a press and was handy as I cleaned and painted the other bits while it was out..

I see, thanks. Is the puller specific to Porsche, readily available ? agree I will not be doing it myself, am giving the car to a garage

Not really..but like most things it usually pays to get a specialist who has done it before manytimes.

It will be cheaper in the long run.

Like checking and replacing all the wheel bearings,balljoints, bushes, and suspension pickups BEFORE spending hundreds on "alignment" etc!
